Job description

Summary/Primary Purpose: To maintain the thrift store at standard operating level and complete all daily duties and responsibilities. Driving box truck and van for donations pickups to support Corps programs and store operations.



Store Clerk Essential Duties and Responsibilities include the following:



  1. Make sure all shelves and clothing racks are full, organized to promote sales.

  2. Assist management team to investigate and properly price items to be sold, as needed.

  3. Process all merchandise efficiently and properly following established standards.

  4. Daily duties include stocking racks, shelves, counter or tables with merchandise to promote sales.

  5. Responsible for learning and then training on the entire processing system to include cash register/.

  6. Maintaining a clean environment throughout the store to include shelves, counters and tables.

  7. When needed, responsible for wrapping and bagging merchandise for customers.

  8. At all times must provide good customer service by being polite, prompt and courteous and in line with the mission of The Salvation Army.

  9. All other duties as assigned.


Donation Driver Essential Duties and Responsibilities include the following:



  1. Make routine contacts for purpose of scheduling/organizing daily pick- ups of food and other donations.

  2. Drive truck/van to pick up donations as scheduled.

  3. Distribute donations to proper departments as required.

  4. Oversee loading/unloading of truck ensuring the safety of personnel and volunteers.

  5. Interact with donors in a positive and friendly manner.

  6. Responsible for truck/van maintenance and safety

  7. Sort, box, organize drop box donations for storage in garage.

  8. Driving is an essential function of the position.

  9. All other duties as assigned.



Supervisory Responsibilities: None



Education and/or Experience: High School diploma or general education degree (GED). Retail and/ or cash register experience preferred, but not required. Experience driving a box truck and using pallet jacks and/or forklifts.



Qualifications: The requirements listed below are representative of the minimal knowledge, skill, and/or ability required for this position.




  1. Ability to be flexible and able to work on multiple projects or tasks simultaneously.

  2. Basic computer skills with ability to access payroll, timekeeping, and personal data via a web-based system.

  3. Proficiency in speaking, reading and writing in English is preferred.

  4. Attention to detail and creative problem-solving skills.

  5. Strong independent judgement.



Other Qualifications: Must pass all applicable background checks. Must successfully complete Safe from Harm training within 90 days of hire, as established by The Salvation Army.



Certificates, Licenses, Registrations: Ability to obtain DOT certification, employer paid physical/certification.

Physical requirements include good speaking, hearing and vision ability and excellent manual dexterity. Ability to stand, bend and reach for extended periods of time, dexterity of hands and fingers to operate office equipment. May need to climb, balance. Kneel, crouch or crawl. This position will require the ability to lift and/or move more than 50+ pounds occasionally.



Working Conditions: The work environment characteristics described here are representative of those an employee encounters while performing the essential functions of this job in a retail setting, and while performing the duties of this job, the employee is occasionally exposed to outside weather conditions. The noise level in the work environment is usually moderate.
