• Currently enrolled in an RN School of Nursing and have completed one (1) semester of a fundamental medical/surgical clinical.
• Minimum of 2 shifts every six weeks - Rotating:
• Days: 7 am - 7 pm
• Nights: 7 pm - 7 am
• Holiday Rotation
• Weekend Rotation

Overview

Thoracic Surgery is a fast-paced surgical stepdown unit with 6 PCU beds and 18 floor beds, caring for complex thoracic surgeries such as lung transplants, thoracotomies, esophagectomies, thymectomies, and hiatal hernia repairs. This unit serves as a Dedicated Education Unit, providing specialized training for nurses interested in critical care, including hemodynamic monitoring, IV titration, chest tube management, and critical thinking skills.

Preferred Qualifications

Role Purpose

Provides multi-skilled, direct patient care under the supervision of a registered nurse. Completion of a foundational nursing skills course or equivalent (fundamentals, foundations, or adult/peds health) is required.

Responsibilities

• Assists nurses with patient and family education. Documents all patient care activities accurately using medical terminology. Acts as 1:1 patient safety sitter as necessary.
• Ensures availability of supplies and equipment to meet each patient's needs.
• Implements direct patient care under the supervision of the nursing team.
• Collects clinical data and reports abnormal findings to the nurse.
• Instructs patients in preparations for tests and procedures.
