Job summary

Vertiv is hiring a Thermal Field Service Technician in Cedar Rapids, Iowa, responsible for the startup and maintenance of data center cooling systems. This entry-level role involves working closely with experienced technicians and requires obtaining an EPA 608 license within six months.

Job Description

The Thermal Field Service Technician is responsible for startup, commissioning, and scheduled or emergency service on data center cooling systems. Techs receive appropriate training certification as part of ongoing development. The technician is expected to meet technical requirements of the Vertiv Certification program throughout progression. The Technician supports products and services within the Thermal product family. This entry‑level position supports experienced technicians on repairs and preventative maintenance duties. Preventative maintenance includes taking unit readings and measurements of temperature, voltages, pressures, and controller diagnostics, cleaning coils, changing filters, sampling fluids, and fluid remediation. The employee must obtain an EPA 608 license within 6 months of hire.

The Technician must establish, promote, and maintain excellent rapport with customers, co‑workers, sales representatives, and others as appropriate.

Qualifications

• Experience working with mechanical and electrical systems.
• Experience working with hand tools and power tools.
• Familiarity with electrical/electronic test equipment and fundamentals.
• Technical aptitude and problem‑solving skills.
• Computer skills and understanding of computer logic.
• HVAC basic understanding preferred, but not required.
• Elementary fix/repair techniques under directed supervision.
• Understanding of psychrometrics.
• Strong mathematical capabilities.
• Ability to work on ladders or comfortably at heights and on roofs.
• Have an EPA 608 license or take and pass the EPA 608 exam within 6 months of hire.

Physical & Environmental Demands

The position requires standing, walking, using hands and fingers, handling objects, reaching, stooping, kneeling, crouching, crawling, talking, hearing, and smelling. Frequent driving is required. The employee must consistently lift up to 50 pounds and occasionally up to 75 pounds.

• Extreme cold (below 32 °F)
• Extreme heat (above 100 °F)
• Noise level (medium/high; may need to shout to be heard)
• Working around moving machinery (fork‑lifts, tractors)
• Protective equipment required (earplugs, gloves, eyewear, respirator, mask, etc.)
• Work outdoors (no effective protection from weather)

Working Conditions

• Travel required.
• Flexible schedules (weekends, evenings, holidays).
• May have on‑call responsibility.
• Valid driver’s license.
• Must be at least 18 years old.
