Job summary

Coastal Oaks is seeking a Primary Therapist to provide clinical services for clients in substance use and co-occurring disorders. The role includes assessments, treatment planning, individual/group/family therapy, and care coordination with a multidisciplinary team to promote recovery and successful discharge planning.

Qualifications include a Master’s degree in a behavioral health field, active SC licensure (LPC/LISW-CP/LMFT, or eligible for supervision), and CPR/First Aid certification.

Job description

The Primary Therapist is responsible for providing clinical services to clients receiving treatment for substance use disorders and co-occurring mental health disorders. This position serves as the client's primary clinician and is responsible for conducting assessments, developing and maintaining treatment plans, providing individual, group, and family therapy, and coordinating care with the interdisciplinary treatment team. The Primary Therapist supports clients throughout the treatment process while promoting recovery, wellness, and successful discharge planning.

Essential Duties and Responsibilities
  • Provide individual, group and family counseling services to assigned clients
  • Conduct biopsychosocial assessments and other clinical assessments as required
  • Develop, implement, and update individualized treatment plans based on client needs and treatment goals
  • Maintain a caseload of clients and provide ongoing clinical support throughout treatment
  • Facilitate psychoeducational, process, and recovery-focused groups
  • Monitor client progress and adjust treatment interventions as appropriate
  • Complete clinical documentation, treatment plans, assessments, progress notes, and discharge summaries in a timely manner
  • Participate in treatment team meetings and collaborate with nursing, medical, case management and support staff
  • Assist clients in identifying barriers to recovery and developing relapse prevention strategies
  • Coordinate with family members, referral sources, and outside providers as clinically appropriate
  • Participate in discharge planning and aftercare recommendations
  • Respond appropriately to client crises and behavioral health emergencies
  • Perform other duties as assigned to support client care and program operations
Qualifications
Education
  • Master’s degree in Counseling, Social Work, Marriage and Family Therapy, Psychology, or a related behavioral health field from an accredited institution required
  • Active, unrestricted clinical licensure in the State of South Carolina required, including one of the following:
  • LPC, LISW-CP, LMFT
  • Associate-level licensure (LPC-A, LMSW, LMFT-A, or equivalent) may be considered if the organization provides clinical supervision and the candidate is working toward independent licensure
  • Current CPR and First Aid certification required or obtained within the designated timeframe after hire
Experience
  • Experience providing counseling services in substance abuse treatment, behavioral health, mental health, or a related setting preferred
  • Experience facilitating individual and group therapy preferred
  • Experience working with individuals diagnosed with substance use disorders and co-occurring mental health disorders preferred
  • Knowledge of evidence-based treatment modalities, including Cognitive Behavioral Therapy (CBT), Motivational Interviewing (MI), Dialectical Behavior Therapy (DBT), and relapse prevention strategies preferred
  • Strong clinical assessment, treatment planning, and documentation skills
  • Ability to establish therapeutic rapport and maintain professional boundaries
  • Excellent communication, organizational, and time-management skills
  • Ability to work effectively within a multidisciplinary treatment team
  • Proficiency with electronic health records and other clinical documentation systems preferred
