Job description

Description

Cumberland Youth & Family Services works to keep children safe, preserve families, empower young adults, and provide behavioral health support that strengthens our communities. We serve youth in foster care, young adults transitioning from care, biological and foster families, single-parent families, and community members. We believe trauma does not define a person’s future and that healing happens through safety, connection, choice, and consistent support.

Position Summary

Reporting to the Clinical Director, the trauma-informed child and family Therapist provides compassionate, developmentally responsive individual, family, and group counseling to children, adolescents, young adults, and families affected by trauma and adversity. Clients may have experienced abuse, neglect, disrupted attachments, grief, family separation, placement instability, or other significant stressors. The therapist assesses clinical needs, develops collaborative treatment and safety plans, delivers evidence-based interventions within their scope of competence, and partners with caregivers and multidisciplinary teams to support stabilization, healing, healthy relationships, and lasting progress.

Key Expectations/Responsibilities:
Direct Clinical Services
  • Provide individual, family, and group psychotherapy and therapeutic skills development in office, via secure telehealth, or in client residences as clinically appropriate and consistent with program needs.
  • Complete intake and ongoing clinical assessments, including trauma history, strengths, functioning, risk, and diagnostic considerations; complete CANS assessments when required.
  • Develop individualized, measurable, strengths‑based treatment plans with clients and, when appropriate, caregivers; review goals and adjust interventions based on progress and changing needs.
  • Apply evidence‑based, trauma‑focused and developmentally appropriate approaches within training and licensure; integrate caregiver participation, psychoeducation, emotional regulation, coping skills, and relational repair when clinically indicated.
  • Facilitate therapeutic groups addressing social‑emotional development, resilience, relationships, and individualized treatment goals.
Trauma‑Informed and Family‑Centered Practice
  • Maintain physical and emotional safety, transparency, cultural humility, respect for lived experience, shared decision‑making, and meaningful client choice.
  • Engage families and supportive adults as partners in care while respecting confidentiality, consent, client preferences, and legal requirements.
  • Recognize how foster care involvement, reunification, and other systems may affect trust, identity, relationships, and engagement; avoid practices that unnecessarily retraumatize clients.
Care Coordination and Crisis Response
  • Collaborate with the Care Team that includes counseling staff, program staff, service planning team, and external partners to coordinate services and advocate for client needs.
  • Work with the Service Planning Team to determine individualized treatment frequency and support STAR Health authorization requests for Medicaid‑covered services as needed.
  • Assess and respond to safety concerns, develop and update safety plans, provide crisis intervention within agency protocols, and connect clients to appropriate emergency and community resources.
  • Provide consultation and crisis response during and, when assigned, after regular hours in coordination with the agency’s after‑hours on‑call team.
  • Participate in resident referral, search, and selection processes when assigned and appropriate to the clinical role.
Documentation, Quality, and Professional Accountability
  • Maintain accurate, confidential, current clinical records, including assessments, treatment plans, progress notes, incidents, and relevant behavioral concerns; complete required documentation within two business days.
  • Meet agency, payer, licensing, and professional requirements for treatment‑plan reviews, documentation, authorizations, and clinical practice.
  • Monitor client progress using clinical judgment, client and caregiver feedback, and appropriate measures; communicate barriers and treatment recommendations to the Clinical Director and Care Team.
  • Manage an assigned caseload and schedule effectively, including after‑school and early evening appointments to improve client access.
  • Participate in supervision or consultation, Care Team meetings, training, and ongoing evaluation of trauma‑informed treatment practices.
Requirements
Required Qualifications
  • Current Texas licensure as a Licensed Professional Counselor (LPC), Licensed Clinical Social Worker (LCSW), or Licensed Marriage and Family Therapist (LMFT), in good standing.
  • At least one year of experience in foster care, residential treatment, community mental health, or a comparable behavioral health setting.
  • Clinical knowledge and experience working with people affected by trauma, including children and adolescents with emotional or behavioral health needs.
  • Ability to assess and treat mental health conditions within professional scope of practice, including complex presentations and significant emotional or behavioral dysregulation.
  • Ability and willingness to complete required insurance credentialing and contracting, including STAR Health requirements where applicable.
  • Strong clinical documentation, crisis assessment, collaboration, professional boundaries, and culturally responsive communication skills.
Preferred Qualifications
  • Training or experience in trauma‑focused modalities such as TF‑CBT, EMDR, attachment‑based family work, or play‑based interventions, as appropriate to age, clinical needs, and practitioner qualifications.
  • Experience supporting foster and biological caregivers, reunification work, and multidisciplinary child welfare teams.
Work Schedule and Expectations
  • This role will require flexible scheduling, including after‑school and early evening appointments, to meet client and family needs. Clinical caseload, direct‑service expectations, administrative time, and on‑call participation are established by the Clinical Director and may vary by position and program.
Working Conditions/Physical Requirements:
  • May lift and carry up to 10 pounds frequently, up to 25 pounds occasionally, up to 40 pounds infrequently.
  • Performs tasks that may involve standing or walking 25% of the day; sitting 75% of the day.
