Job summary

Fort Lewis College seeks a Theatrical Technical Director to oversee the safety and technical theatre needs of productions and the building. This staff position sits in the Theatre area of the Department of Performing Arts.

Responsibilities include managing student crews, attending meetings and rehearsals, creating production schedules, and budgeting for sets, props, sound, lights, and costumes. The role reports to the Chair and involves safety training and coordination with Physical Plant.

Position Summary

Job Description

Essential Functions and Responsibilities

  • Maintain and ensure safety of all students, faculty, staff andpatrons in the building for all events and daily classes.
  • Manage student build crews
  • Attend production meetings
  • Attend all technical rehearsals
  • Create production schedule for season including all rentersusing the theatre spaces.
  • Manage budget for sets, props, sound, lights, costumes for allproductions
  • Identify, plan and manage maintenance budget for all productionequipment
  • Attend, oversight and participation in all productionstrikes
  • Point person with Physical Plant for any repairs, issuesrelated to performance spaces, scene shop, light shop &booth.
  • Engage authentically with students, the department, andcolleagues
  • Takes responsibility for communicating with Chair about anynecessary grading of student work and at midterm and at the end ofeach semester
  • Manage in building and campus zircon storage of props, lights,and useable set pieces.
  • Implement safety procedures as changes are made or safety needsare identified. Encourage students to use industry standard safetyprotocol. Organize any training with students needed to keepeveryone up to current standards.
  • Create training procedures on all equipment and tools. Alsoappropriate documentation of student competency on thisequipment.
  • Advise season selection as needed (with respect to size ofdepartment, tech support, and production schedule needs)
  • Coordinate with other departments when necessary
  • Maintain knowledge and awareness of digital accessibilityincluding the American with Disabilities Act and Section 508.
  • Produce and remediate digitally accessible materials inaccordance with FLC standards.
  • Perform other duties as assigned.

Required Education, Specialized Skills and Experience

  • Demonstrated experience managing students in the sceneshop
  • Demonstrated experience constructing scenery
  • Experience collaborating as a team player colleagues andcommunity
  • Ability to provide technical direction for all shows, includingleading student-focused design and crew teams, and budgetmanagement.
  • Demonstrated ability to mentor students in technicaltheatre.
  • A demonstrated commitment to diversity, equity, inclusion, andstudent success, as well as working with broadly diversecommunities

Preferred Education, Specialized Skills andExperience

  • A completed degree in a theatrical design discipline
  • OSHA Certification.
  • Knowledge of all necessary technical programs to producedesigns for set, lights, projections, and audio.
  • Knowledge and proficiency with carpentry tools and set buildingstandards.
  • Supervise construction and installation of technical elements(Sets, Props, Lights, Projections, Sound, Rigging)

This position reports to the Chair of the Department of PerformingArts

Compensation
