DESCRIPTION

Under the general direction of the Cultural Arts Technical Supervisor, performs skilled technical duties related to the setup and breakdown of live productions and performances. This includes operating sound and lighting systems and other related duties as assigned.

DISTINGUISHING CHARACTERISTICS

This is a limited-services, on-call technical position within the Cultural Arts Division. Incumbents assist with or evaluate stage construction, operate stage equipment, lighting, and sound systems for shows and events.

Duties may include, but are not limited to:
  1. Assist with operational activities including setup, running, and striking of shows and events.
  2. Execute scene changes, set props, and manage stage scenery.
  3. Perform production load-in and load-out.
  4. Install rigging, lighting, sound equipment, and scenery.
  5. Operate stage equipment, lighting, sound, and digital projection systems.
  6. Maintain theater equipment including follow spots, microphones, and control boards.
  7. Prepare or modify plans, drawings, and light plots.
  8. Ensure safety standards in production areas.
  9. Rig curtains and operate automated staging systems.
  10. Perform minor repairs and maintenance on stage equipment.
  11. Perform related duties as assigned.
KNOWLEDGE OF
  • Technical theater production systems (audio, video, carpentry/rigging, lighting).
  • Types and uses of stage equipment.
  • Computerized theater systems.
  • Electrical theory, effects, and safety precautions.
  • Digital video setup and operation.
ABILITY TO
  • Operate theater equipment including lighting, sound, and rigging systems.
  • Use hand and power tools.
  • Perform basic housekeeping tasks.
EDUCATION AND EXPERIENCE

Equivalent to high school graduation and three years of experience in technical theater or related fields.

SPECIAL REQUIREMENTS

Flexible schedule including evenings and weekends.

LICENSES AND CERTIFICATES

Valid California driver’s license or ability to obtain one.
