Work remotely as a Social Media Associate at The Athletic and earn between $55,000 to $65,000 per year

Who: 1 to 3 years experience in social media, digital marketing, or similar. Must have experience managing multiple social channels. Must have basic knowledge of data analytics to understand and track KPIs.

As a Social Media Associate, you will bridge the gap between The Athletic’s world-class newsroom and the readers, listeners, and viewers who love what the brand has to offer. In this role, you will create social-specific content designed to engage sports fans across the globe, focusing on soccer (MLS and European), to drive growth, engagement, and awareness. The Social Media Associate will have a strong passion for media and sports, and a deep understanding of social media platforms, trends, and tactics. This role will be remote working in the United States or Canada and require working nights and weekends.

What you’ll do

As a Social Media Associate, some of your responsibilities will include:

  • Executing day-to-day social strategy which includes covering breaking news, major moments, and live games on a variety of platforms.
  • Working with editors to develop optimal copy and visual assets to amplify top content (stories, videos, podcasts).
  • Working closely with the FC social team in London to ensure comprehensive coverage of MLS and NWSL on FC accounts.
  • Identifying trending storylines for the newsroom.
  • Using templates to produce creative assets (design, video) for social platforms that fit within brand guidelines.
  • Assisting in gathering insights and learnings through ongoing social testing and tracking, analyzing what’s working and what’s not to enable us to continually develop and improve output.
  • Ability to work in a fast-paced news environment, processing relevant information from multiple departments and synthesizing it to weave together a plan for the immediate, mid-term, and long-term future.

  • Basic photo and video editing skills.
  • Creativity to engage a passionate audience of sports fans.
  • Strong writing skills with a keen eye for detail, grammar & punctuation.
  • Excellent collaboration across different functions of the Audience Team.
  • Demonstrable interest and working knowledge of all major sports, with a specialized emphasis on soccer (MLS, NWSL, International, Premier League, European men’s and women’s soccer).
  • Flexibility in terms of schedule (regular weekends, evenings, holidays, etc. work is expected).
  • A positive attitude and a willingness to learn and develop.
