If the traditional civilian career path has left you wanting more, both personally and professionally, a JAG career will re-inspire your love of the law. This lifestyle is the antidote to the day-in, day-out corporate grind. Being a JAG means you’ll be doing meaningful work from day one—with opportunities to practice in almost every field, see the world, and become the lawyer you’ve always wanted to be.
You do not incur a service commitment until you accept your JAG assignment. The initial active duty commitment is four years, beginning on the day you depart for Officer Training School (OTS).
If you are prior active duty, National Guard, or Reserve, your service will be credited for pay purposes. Prior commissioned service can also advance your entry grade and date of rank. All active duty service counts toward retirement.
Selection boards are held in February, April, August, and November. Applications are accepted via our online system, with all materials due by the 10th of the month prior to the board. Schedule your interview with a Staff Judge Advocate (SJA) at any Air Force Base through the online application system. The SJA will contact you to schedule the interview, which must be completed before the first of the month of the board.
After the interview, the SJA will prepare a report and forward it, along with your application materials, to HQ USAF/JAX. Do not mail materials directly to HQ USAF/JAX. For additional materials, contact your SJA. Late submissions will not be accepted after the application deadline.
Use the online system to select your preferred AFB for the interview. After submitting your application, the SJA will contact you to schedule the interview. Find a map of all AFB locations here: BASE LOCATIONS.
Letters should attest to your work ethic, duty performance, and leadership potential. Address all letters to “Selection Board Members” and upload them as part of your online application.
