Job summary

The New York Times seeks an experienced data journalist to lead Texas-focused reporting in collaboration with Times reporters across the Lone Star State. You will combine traditional reporting with data collection and analysis, handling complex datasets and deriving actionable insights.

You will work with Python/R and SQL tooling, communicating findings clearly while partnering with colleagues to elevate data capabilities and maintain journalistic independence.

Qualifications

• 3+ years of data journalism experience
• Deep knowledge of Texas datasets
• Experience finding, requesting, cleaning and analyzing complex datasets
• Ability to communicate data findings clearly and concisely
• Proficiency with Python and/or R, spreadsheets, and relational databases

Responsibilities

• Lead the Data Journalism department’s Texas-focused reporting collaborations
• Pitch and report data-driven stories that illuminate the day’s news events and investigate wrongdoing
• Obtain and build datasets through records requests, web scraping, document parsing and fieldwork
• Develop understanding of datasets to mine for reporting leads and insights
• Work independently and in diverse teams on stories
• Support and help elevate colleagues’ data skills and understanding of journalistic independence
