Job summary

The New York Times seeks a Data Journalist based in Texas to blend traditional reporting with data collection and analysis, reporting to the Data Editor in New York City.

You will lead collaborations with Times reporters across the Lone Star State, obtain and analyze datasets, and design rigorous methodologies to shed light on major storylines while upholding our commitment to independent journalism.

Qualifications

  • 3+ years of data journalism experience.
  • Deep knowledge of Texas.
  • Experience finding, requesting, cleaning and analyzing complex datasets.
  • Ability to communicate data findings clearly and succinctly.

Responsibilities

  • Lead the Data Journalism department's Texas-focused reporting collaborations
  • Pitch and report data-driven stories that illuminate the day's news events
  • Obtain and build datasets through records requests, web scraping, document parsing
  • Develop understanding of datasets to mine them for reporting leads
  • Be comfortable working on stories independently and in diverse teams
  • Support and uphold journalistic independence and mission
