Job summary

BorgWarner in Arden, NC is seeking a Testing Technician to reliably set up gas stands, engine dynos, and bench tests, compiling engineering reports and presenting data to Engineering. You will perform various lab duties and ensure accurate measurements and timely communication of test results.

The role requires reading engineering drawings, using measurement tools, and hands-on testing of powertrain components. Onsite role with full-time hours and strong benefits.

Qualifications

• Associate’s degree in an engineering related field preferred or related education and experience in automotive technical field.
• Equivalent mechanical powertrain experience in automotive industry with 2+ years of R&D or technical lab testing if no degree.
• Experience with general machining and fabrication, including basic welding.
• Experience in automotive test environments (powertrain systems) or related lab testing is desirable.
• Must read and interpret mechanical drawings.
• Proficient use of indicators, micrometers and dial calipers and related equipment.
• Able to perform tasks with minimal supervision and meet deadlines.
• Basic computer literacy including lab software and Microsoft Office.
• Willing to attend courses on test protocols.

Responsibilities

• Read and interpret instructions and secure procedures for Engineering/Customer requests (GEMS Tickets).
• Read engineering prints and measure hardware using appropriate tools.
• Measure and assemble hardware prior to testing.
• Set up gas stands and engine testing per specifications.
• Independently operate gas stands, engine dynamometers and other lab equipment.
• Perform system-level testing and component qualification on gas stands and engine stands.
• Install engines and perform engine/dynamometer setup checks and schedule writing.
• Demonstrate basic understanding of measurements, temperatures, pressures, and frequencies; convert units as needed.
• Maintain logs, testing notes and records per instructions.
• Assist Test Engineering in calibrating test stands.
• Perform maintenance on stands and equipment per OPM log.
• Lead 6S activities and pursue ongoing training.
• Adhere to quality, health, safety, and environmental policies.

POSITION SUMMARY:

Reliably set-up and perform gas stand, engine dynamometer, special testing, and other benchwork. Complete engineering reports, present data to Engineering, as well as other lab duties.

KEY ACCOUNTABILITIES:

• Read and understand instructions and secure the necessary procedure(s), work instruction(s), or specification(s) to complete Engineering/Customer requests (GEMS Tickets).

• Reads engineering prints and can measure hardware utilizing the proper measurement tools and techniques.

• Measures and assembles hardware prior to testing.

• Performs setup of gas and engine stands and changeover of hardware for the next test sequence using correct adapters and connections for testing per specification(s).

• Independently operates gas stands, engine dynamometers, and other special testing equipment, observes, and immediately interprets data and reacts accordingly.

• Performs system-level performance, sub-system level, and component qualification testing on gas stands. Also performs gas stand functional and durability testing on gas stands.

• Performs engine durability testing, which includes installation of engine and dynamometer, dynamometer and engine installation checks, as well as writing and editing test schedules.

• Demonstrates basic understanding and knowledge of measurements, temperatures, pressures, and frequencies. Able to convert measurements, temperatures, pressures, and frequencies to other units of measure, or scale.

• Performs performance, burst and containment, durability, and mechanical qualification testing on gas stands, and engine stands.

• Completes component level qualification testing such as blade frequency measurements and fatigue testing.

• Gathers, processes, interprets, and distributes customer data. Effectively communicates customer testing results in a timely manner.

• Completes logbooks, testing notes, and other related records as required per Engineering requests, work instructions, procedures or specifications.

• Assists Test Engineering in calibration of test stands.

• Performs maintenance on gas stands, engine stands, and test equipment as defined in the Operator Preventive Maintenance (OPM) log.

• Completes logbooks, testing notes, and other related records as required per Engineering requests, work instructions, procedures or specifications.

• Demonstrates good interpersonal, communications, and decision-making skills.

QUALIFICATIONS:

• Associate’s degree in an engineering related field is preferred or related education and experience in an automotive technical field or certification from an Airframe and Powerplant technical school.

• Willing to consider in lieu of degree: Equivalent mechanical powertrain experience in the automotive industry (in-depth engine work including tear down, reassembly, measurement, and dynamometer testing) if coupled with a minimum of 2 years of relevant R&D or technical lab testing experience.

• Experience in general machining and fabrication, including basic welding.

• Experience in professional automotive components test environment (powertrain systems, lab or R&D) is desired. Demonstrated mechanical aptitude is a must, combined with ability and willingness to complete both on the job and other formal training as required.

• Must be proficient in reading and interpreting mechanical and engineering drawings.

• Experienced and knowledgeable in the proper use of indicators, micrometers and dial calipers and other related equipment.

• Ability to carry out assigned tasks with minimal supervision, and complete task in a timely manner.

• Must be able to demonstrate Basic Computer literacy including the ability to use lab related software as well as Microsoft Office applications (Outlook, Excel, Word, PowerPoint, Teams, Edge)
