Job summary

Our Blood Institute in Oklahoma City, OK seeks a Laboratory Technician II to perform tests with minimal supervision, handle sample processing, equipment maintenance and reporting in two departments to ensure a safe blood supply and timely turnaround. Qualifications include a Bachelor's degree in laboratory science or MLT, with preferred certification and strong communication skills.

Qualifications

• Bachelor's degree in chemical, physical, biological, or clinical laboratory science from an accredited institution or MLT from an accredited institution
• Medical Laboratory Technician certification is preferred
• Written and verbal communication skills are required

Responsibilities

• Follow SOPs for sample handling, testing, reporting and record keeping
• Adhere to QC policies and document calibrations and maintenance
• Follow policies when test systems are out of acceptable performance
• Identify problems affecting test performance and notify management or Medical Director
• Document corrective actions for deviations
• Perform maintenance on testing equipment and document it
• Troubleshoot issues with equipment, reagents, and controls
• Coordinate accessioning, processing, testing and reporting issues with supervisor
• Be available for on-call STAT testing and blood inventory issues
• Rotate weekends/holidays as scheduled
• Discard samples as required
• Inspect reagents and supplies
• Label reagents and supplies with date and status
• Store reagents and supplies appropriately
• Cross-train in two departments
• Work in cross-trained department at least seven days every three months
• Perform additional duties as needed

Days: Monday through Friday; rotating weekends

Hours: 8:30 p.m. to 7:00 a.m.

Position

Shall perform tests which require the exercise of independent judgment and responsibility, with minimal supervision by the Testing Laboratory Director/Supervisor or Lead, in only those specialties or subspecialties in which they are qualified by education, training, and experience. Resolve problems as needed to ensure a safe blood supply and a reasonable testing turn around time. A Laboratory Technician II position is responsible for sample processing, test performance, equipment maintenance, and for reporting test results In at least two departments.

Primary Responsibilities

• Follow Testing Laboratory's Standard Operating Procedures for sample handling and processing, testing, reporting and maintaining records of test results.


• Adhere to the laboratory's quality control policies and document all quality control activities, equipment and procedural calibrations and maintenance performed.


• Follow the laboratory's established policies and procedures whenever test systems are not within the laboratory's established acceptable levels of performance.


• Can identify problems that may adversely affect test performance or reporting of test results and either must correct the problems and immediately notify the testing laboratory management or Medical Director.


• Document all corrective actions taken when test systems deviate from the laboratory's established performance specifications.


• Perform all necessary maintenance on testing equipment and document on applicable maintenance forms.


• Troubleshoot issues with equipment, reagents, and controls.


• Communicate all accessioning, sample processing, testing, equipment, and reagent issues to Supervisor/Lead Technician.


• Available for taking on-call for STAT testing and testing due to blood inventory issues.


• Be available to work hours according to draw/clients and rotate weekends/holidays.


• Discard samples as required


• Inspect reagents and supplies that are received in the testing laboratory


• Label reagents and supplies with date received and status


• Store reagents and supplies in the appropriate location


• Cross-train and perform testing/maintenance in two departments


• Work in cross-trained department a minimum of seven days every three months; seven days do not have to be consecutive and include a weekend shift and on-call rotation


• Perform additional duties as needed
