Job description

Kentucky Blood Center is seeking a detail-oriented, self-motivated Testing Laboratory Technician professional to perform required testing of products in accordance with guidelines. Other responsibilities include antigen typing, QC/calibration of reagents and equipment, quarantine and release of products, auditing of processes, general lab duties, and compliance with policies and procedures. Strong written and oral communication skills, a do-what-it-takes work ethic, and a team-player attitude are required. Job-specific training provided.

Hours: Monday-Friday 9:00pm-5:30am

Training Hours: Monday-Friday 8:00am-4:30pm for approximately 8-12 weeks

$1,500 Sign-On Bonus (after 90-days and if on board by 6/30/25).

Essential Job Duties

  • Performs manual and automated tests on samples from blood donors and patients.
  • Prepares shipment of tubes for donor sample testing.
  • Receives and reviews test results from testing lab vendor; takes appropriate action and performs batch release for products to be labeled.
  • Manages bacterial testing for components.
  • Performs related testing and manages splitting apheresis products as appropriate.
  • Executes quality control procedures on test kits, lab equipment, and reagents.
  • Performs laboratory Quality Assurance (QA) audits.
  • Places blood and components in proper storage or disposal areas.
  • Reports procedural or technical problems to immediate supervisor, manager, or designee.
  • Takes inventory of reagents.
  • Fulfills maintenance, calibration and Quality Control (QC) on equipment as needed.
  • Completes QC process for products.
  • Performs testing on products for Components Laboratory Technician competency evaluations.
  • Assists in the training of other employees as requested.

Work Environment: This position regularly involves the following:

  • Frequently sit, stand and walk.
  • Occasionally fulfill basic clerical duties (typing/writing).
  • Occasionally lift/carry up to 35 pounds without assistance.
  • Occasionally bend or reach to perform various job tasks.
  • Analyze complex situations and make sound decisions.
  • Adapt to changing priorities and work under pressure.
  • Visually differentiate and identify specific colors, and various shades.

Qualifications:

  • Associate degree in laboratory science, MLT, CLS, MLS (ASCP) or equivalent, preferred; minimum of a Bachelor’s degree in chemistry, biology, biomedical science, or life sciences, with appropriate combination of laboratory experience may be substituted for MLT credential.
  • Prior laboratory or similar healthcare experience required.
  • Requires the ability to differentiate and identify specific colors, and various shades.
  • MS Office and Adobe proficiency with the ability to navigate and enter data in web applications and custom systems.
  • Proof of education must be provided during the interview process.
