Job summary

Pantex Plant, Amarillo, TX, seeks a Tester Design Engineer at associate to senior specialist levels to develop high quality design packages and provide field support for plant systems.

Responsibilities include hardware/software testing apparatus design, multi-disciplinary teamwork, and oversight of qualification plans, with DOE O 426.2 requirements guiding experience and safety aspects. This role offers strong growth and security clearances potential.

Qualifications

  • GPA requirements: minimum 3.0/4.0 for bachelor, 3.3/4.0 for masters, 3.5/4.0 for PhD.
  • DOE O 426.2 experience requirements can be satisfied after employment.
  • Engineering degree with nuclear experience or related science preferred.

Responsibilities

  • Develop high quality, detailed design packages and field technical support.
  • Prepare cost estimates, BOMs, and statements of work; create design criteria and calculations.
  • Lead or be a team member in multidisciplinary projects; provide input to system engineers.
  • Perform walkdowns of facilities to generate design docs and provide field support.
  • Design and develop testing apparatus: hardware and software, driver interfaces, and reports.
  • Oversee fabrication, qualification/testing plans, and project management.

What You’ll Do

As a design engineer, the candidate will be responsible for developing high quality, detailed design packages, providing engineering procurement and field technical support to implement these designs, and providing expertise for troubleshooting and technical assessments of plant systems. Design involves the preparation of conceptual engineering deliverables such as cost-estimating bills of material and man-hour estimates, statements of work, design criteria, and title II engineering deliverables including preparation of calculation and analyses, construction specifications & drawings, and equipment specifications. Candidate must effectively and cooperatively work as a team member of an integrated project team, or as a technical lead for a multi-discipline task and will routinely provide input to system engineers and other plant customers. Design engineer will routinely perform walkdowns of existing plant facilities in order to generate design documents and provide field support to craft personnel.

Tester Design support includes electrical hardware & software design of testing apparatuses. Responsibilities range from conceptual design, detailed hardware design (a combination of analog, digital, embedded firmware, schematic capture, board layout), detailed software design (instrument drivers, system integration, database design/interface, report generation, related software quality assurance documentation), analysis, overseeing fabrication of hardware, defining and executing qualification/testing plans, field support, as well as project management. Designing and developing software applications used to automate complex instrumentation systems, perform calculations on and manipulate very large data sets, interface with databases, create user friendly operator interfaces, and consolidate results in to legible reports.

Minimum Job Requirements
  • Bachelor’s degree in Electrical Engineering, Computer Engineering or Computer Science discipline with a minimum 3.0/4.0 cumulative GPA.
  • OR Master’s degree in an engineering discipline with a minimum 3.3/4.0 cumulative GPA.
  • OR PhD in an engineering discipline with a minimum 3.5/4.0 cumulative GPA.
  • There is a minimum Grade Point Average (GPA) requirement up to 4 years post-graduation at time of offer and confirmed by transcript
    • Beyond four years from graduation, engineering experience will supersede GPA as a requirement for hire
  • In addition, the applicant must meet the requirements of DOE O 426.2 (i.e., Baccalaureate in engineering or related science, 2 years job-related and at least 1-year nuclear experience, or a DOE O 426.2 alternative)
    • DOE O 426.2 experience requirements can be satisfied following employment
    • In the interim, newly hired personnel will not be assigned duties that could impact the safety basis of nuclear facilities (Ref. DOE O 426.2)
Preferred Job Requirements
  • Demonstrated technical capabilities with PCB design tools such as Altium and Cadence.
  • Experience working with NXP microcontrollers
  • Experience with safety critical circuity
  • Knowledgeable in hardware design
  • Understanding of Radio Frequency (RF)

Requires a Q clearance; however all qualified candidates will be considered regardless of their current clearance status. The ability to obtain and maintain a Department of Energy Q clearance is required.

Position may require entry into Materials Access Areas (MAA) and participation in the Human Reliability Program (HRP). If HRP is required, candidate must complete a counterintelligence-scope polygraph, pursuant to 10CFR 709. Medical requirements may apply.
