Job summary

Eversource Energy is seeking a Test Technician to support test services for substation equipment. The role progresses through four steps to advance to Test Specialist, with duties under supervision and opportunities to contribute to testing and maintenance activities.

The candidate should hold an engineering degree (or equivalent) and a valid driver's license, and be willing to participate in on-call assignments as required by the job.

Qualifications

  • Bachelor's degree in engineering or engineering technology or an associate's degree in electrical engineering/technology or equivalent.
  • Valid motor vehicle license and ability to stand on call assignments.
  • Desirable knowledge of transmission protection devices and related systems.

Responsibilities

  • Perform power factor and breaker timing tests.
  • Analyze and interpret test results and present findings.
  • Perform basic relay testing.
  • Perform technical calculations for test applications.
  • Perform cable proof tests.
  • Perform cable locating and fault locating services.
  • Assist with installation and testing of mobile transformers.
  • Locate sources of radio and television interference.
  • Perform prescribed tests on underground network protectors.
  • Troubleshoot, repair, and test electrical devices such as recloser controls and voltage regulators.
  • Adjust and repair substation recording and indicating meters.
  • Assist with substation modifications and power quality investigations.
  • Under supervision, provide test services for operation and maintenance of substation equipment.

This position is a four (4) step progression that provides the experience and training necessary for an incumbent to be eligible for advancement to the Test Specialist classificationPOSITION REQUIREMENTS:A bachelor's degree in engineering or engineering technology OR associate's degree in electrical engineering or electrical technology OR formal education equivalent to an associate's degree in math and science are required. Individual must hold a valid motor vehicle license. Individual will have to stand on call assignments. Also desirable:Strong knowledge of and experience with transmission protection devices such as or similar to: carrier communication equipment, electro-mechanical and microprocessor relays, electrical protection principles and theories, electronic and computer controlled systems and devices, computer networking techniques and methods, National Electrical and National Electrical Safety Codes, relay and control operational and safety procedures, designing testing systems and equipment, strong organizational skills, utilizing interpersonal skills to communicate with coworkers, supervisor, etc.1. Assists with power quality investigationsThe salary range for this position starts at Step $43.67 and progresses in accordance with the union contract. Check out the career site for an overview of benefits.POSITION DESCRIPTION:Test Technician(Steps 1-4): This is a four-step progression which provides the experience and training for an incumbent to be eligible for advancement to TestSpecialist. The selected candidate will be slotted at the appropriate level based upon their education/experience. No experience is required for level1. Under direct supervision, individual provides test services to support the operation and maintenance of substation electrical equipment. Individual will provide test services to support the operation, maintenance, and construction of substation and electrical equipment with direction from Test Supervisor, Project Test Specialist or Test Specialist. Primary duties of the Test Technician include but are not limited to perform the following tests - power factor insulation testing, breaker timing testing, analyze and interpret test results and present findings for review; basic protection relay testing; technical calculations for test applications. Individual will also assist with annual transmission line telecommunications testing.Bargaining unit employees with contractual rights to this position will be given first consideration.This position is being posted internally and externally also.
