Job summary

Summary Job Description

The Test Engineer will interface with Project Management, Application Development, and leadership. This position is responsible for ensuring that all testing work items are delivered in a quality manner. This includes delivery without critical defects, in accordance with the schedule, with the highest degree of accuracy and quality. This position plans and executes required testing for systems and applications, while collaborating with team members on test plans, test case creation and execution.

Essential Accountabilities

Level I

  • Develops and maintains business domain subject matter expertise of a given Product Family, to assist with the design and creation of the testing scope and test plan for any incoming project work within the Product Family.
  • Analyzes requirements and technical specifications to build appropriate test cases and find or create appropriate test data.
  • Conducts test case reviews with the agile team to ensure proper coverage of the requirements.
  • Documents, administers, and executes manual and automated (where appropriate) test cases, test procedures/scripts, per the test scope/plan, for all testing types and functions.
  • Works with Test Automation Engineer(s) to define what aspects of testing should be automated and provides the test cases for them to code in an automation tool.
  • Ensures test results are accurately recorded in the appropriate tool.
  • Interprets, analyzes, and communicates test results to agile teams, stakeholders and management in a clear, consistent, and timely manner.
  • Creates defects for issues found during testing.
  • Provides detailed information on recreation steps, environment found, components impacted, error logs, test data utilized, etc.
  • Monitors defects and assist developers or other team members with triage.
  • Attends team agile meetings and product/project related functions as required.
  • Collaborates with agile team to meet the overall sprint and milestone goals and deliverables.
  • Raises risks or issues to the agile team or others as appropriate, to maintain transparency and proactively help the team’s find resolutions.

Level II (in addition to Level I Accountabilities)
  • Recommends opportunities for productivity and process improvements.
  • Scopes and plans all testing efforts.
  • Works on multiple projects, while ensuring testing activities are completed on time.
  • Stays current on new tools and technologies, continuously looking for opportunities to improve.
  • Mentors less experienced testers in specific business knowledge areas and/or testing techniques.
Level III (in addition to Level II Accountabilities)
  • Implements recommended productivity and process improvements such as:
  • Implementing advanced testing techniques
  • Metric tracking
  • Identifying automation opportunities
  • Acts as a subject matter expert with testing methodologies.
  • Develops, defines, and implements test standards and guidelines.
Level IV (in addition to Level III Accountabilities)
  • Leads and owns the efforts to define the testing strategies, scope, and plans for multiple projects within a product family portfolio. This includes but is not limited to:
  • Defining types of testing needed.
  • Reviewing test environment dependencies, limitations.
  • Defining what test data will be required (high level).
  • Coordinating testing that might span multiple teams or projects (managing dependencies).
  • Ensuring test cases are properly written, structured, organized and updated, per the agile standards.
  • Attends core team meetings as a lead representative, providing testing and defect progress updates, in addition to risk and mitigation information.
  • Acts as a representative for the testing organization, sharing project status, resolving barriers to testing progress, and raising any risks or issues with projects.
  • Assists other testing team members, as required, to help ensure the success of a project or release.
  • Onboards new testers into an assigned agile team. This includes, but is not limited to;
  • Familiarizing new team members with the day-to-day tasks, responsibilities and deliverables.
  • Providing step by step procedures for testers to follow to configure their testing environments, tools, etc.
  • Recommends and implements opportunities for productivity and process improvements.
Level V (in addition to Level IV Accountabilities)
  • Reviews the quality metrics dashboards and follow up with teams on any findings.
  • Collaborates with the automation engineers to review the test automation implementation across the product family portfolio, monitoring for the following:
  • Requirements coverage.
  • Testing code quality and stability.
  • Cadence of runs against development deployments.
  • Status of the automation backlog
  • Monitors/tracks third-party issues that need resolution outside the scope of an agile team’s product/project.
  • Monitors/coordinates the UAT test cycles across agile teams.
  • Ensures test reporting metrics are accurate and delivered to the project teams in a timely manner including:
  • Tests artifacts such as what code is being installed.
  • Bug reports.
  • Test execution results.
  • Leader of a testing/quality community of practice within a product family to foster a culture of open communication and new ideas.
  • Recommends test solutions and strategies to senior management and the architecture council.
Minimum Qualifications

All Levels

  • Associates degree in Computer Science, Information Technology or related field. In lieu of degree three (3) cumulative years of related technical, domain experience or related experience required.
  • Basic knowledge of:
  • Testing methodologies (black box, white box, regression, etc.)
  • Business requirements and use cases.
  • Databases, APIs, mobile, windows, web applications
  • Test cases, procedures, and test scripts
Level II (in Addition To Level I Qualifications)
  • Three (3) years of related work experience.
  • Demonstrated experience working directly with business users.
  • Experience with testing at various levels (functional, integration, system, load, and performance testing).
  • Experience working with iterative, waterfall, and agile methodologies.
  • Demonstrated experience in executing/administering test automation.
  • Demonstrated ability to work on complex projects and multiple project testing efforts concurrently.
  • Ability to understand and write complex data driven test scenarios, workflow testing, user stories, and behavior driven development.
Level III (in Addition To Level II Qualifications)
  • Six (6) years of related work experience.
  • Ability to manage large and/or multiple project testing efforts simultaneously.
  • Demonstrated ability to identify root cause problems and determine innovative sources for solutions and opportunities.
  • Demonstrated ability to drive complex testing solutions to completion.
Level IV (in Addition To Level III Qualifications)
  • Eight (8) years of related work experience. A combination of experience, advanced degree or certificates may be considered.
  • Demonstrated experience leading a scrum team to improve software testing. methodologies, technologies, and techniques.
  • Practical knowledge and experience in all phases of the SDLC.
  • Working knowledge of automated, load and performance testing.
  • Experience creating and updating software tester onboarding documentation, testing process and procedure documents.
Level V (in Addition To Level IV Qualifications)
  • Ten (10) years of related work experience. A combination of experience, advanced degree or certificates may be considered.
  • Demonstrated experience simultaneously leading multiple scrum teams to improve software testing methodologies, technologies, and techniques.
  • Demonstrated experience compiling and reporting test results, metrics and issues to senior management.
  • Demonstrated experience working with automation development engineers to ensure requirements coverage, automation test quality and planning test automation execution.
  • Demonstrated experience working with third party vendors to track issues and resolve in a timely manner.
Physical Requirements
  • Ability to complete work in a traditional office environment under fluorescent lighting.
  • Ability to orally communicate.
  • Must be able to function while sitting at a desk viewing a computer and using a keyboard and mouse for three (3) or more hours at a time.
  • Must be able to travel across the enterprise.
  • Ability to work in a home office for continuous periods of time for business continuity.
