Job summary

Qualifications

  • Bachelor's degree in Engineering or Optical Physics with 3+ years of relevant industry experience
  • Hands-on experience with fiber optic components and test equipment (lasers, optical switches, power meters)
  • Familiarity with Telcordia, ISO, and IEC standards preferred

  • Develop and implement test methodologies and software for automated test systems, and assess accuracy and repeatability
  • Develop calibration procedures and define measurement uncertainty

  • Document, verify, and approve test results, data analysis, and test reports in alignment with industry and customer requirements
  • Independently identify technical objectives and critical experiments; contribute to and lead project workstreams

Our Optical Communications segment has recently evolved from being a manufacturer of optical fiber and cable, hardware and equipment to being a comprehensive provider of industry-leading optical solutions across the broader communications industry.This segment is classified into two main product groupings – carrier network and enterprise network. The carrier network product group consists primarily of products and solutions for optical-based communications infrastructure for services such as video, data and voice communications. The enterprise network product group consists primarily of optical-based communication networks sold to businesses, governments and individuals for their own use.

Overview

Corning's Test and Qualification Laboratory provides trusted, standards-based optical testing of fiber optic products to support product innovation cycles. We are seeking a Test and Qualification Lab Engineer to design and automate optical test systems, develop rigorous measurement methodologies, and drive accuracy and repeatability across our product qualification programs.

Primary Day-to-Day Responsibilities
  • Design, build, and automate optical test systems; apply scientific principles and best practices to develop solutions for complex measurement challenges
  • Develop and implement test methodologies and software for automated test systems, and assess accuracy and repeatability
  • Develop calibration procedures and define measurement uncertainty
  • Plan and execute product test programs; perform failure mode analysis and troubleshoot optical measurement systems
  • Document, verify, and approve test results, data analysis, and test reports in alignment with Telcordia, ISO, IEC, and customer requirements
  • Independently identify technical objectives and critical experiments; contribute to and lead project workstreams
  • Coach and train technicians and engineers
  • Generate test reports and laboratory procedures
Required Qualifications
  • Bachelor's degree in Engineering or Optical Physics with 3+ years of relevant industry experience with fiber optic or telecommunications products
  • Hands‑on experience with fiber optic components and test equipment (lasers, optical switches, power meters)
  • Strong knowledge of optical metrology and statistical data analysis
  • Ability to travel 25–40%
Desired Qualifications
  • Master's degree with emphasis in optics or photonics
  • Experience in a laboratory environment supporting product qualification or optical certification programs
  • Experience leading technical workstreams or mentoring engineers and technicians
  • Demonstrated programming skills, preferably in LabVIEW
  • Familiarity with relevant industrial standards including Telcordia, ISO, and IEC

The range for this position is$81,701.00-$112,339.00 assuming full time status. Starting pay for the successful applicant is dependent on a variety of job‑related factors, including but not limited to geographic location, market demands, experience, training, and education.
