Job Summary

The Biological Sciences Department of the Bailey College of Science and Mathematics at California Polytechnic State University, San Luis Obispo, is seeking a full‑time, academic‑year, tenure‑track appointment in physiology. The position is for an Assistant Professor, beginning approximately August 12, 2027, with the anticipated salary range of $97,788 – $107,628. The successful candidate will teach a variety of undergraduate and graduate biology courses, design and lead a student‑centered research program that engages undergraduates and master’s students, and provide departmental and university service. Excellence in teaching, an active research program, and service are expected, with an emphasis on high‑quality undergraduate education and inclusive, student‑focused instruction.

Responsibilities
  • Teach 2–3 lecture or lab courses per term, covering introductory, upper‑division, and graduate biology and physiology courses (e.g., human anatomy and physiology, introductory biology, upper‑division physiology).
  • Develop and maintain a research program that attracts undergraduate and master’s‑level graduate participation, including mentoring student research and master’s theses.
  • Provide service to the department and university, including committee work, student advising, and engagement with cross‑disciplinary collaborations (e.g., Center for Applications in Biotechnology, Regenerative Medicine master’s program, Center for Coastal Marine Sciences).
  • Participate in scholarly activities such as peer‑reviewed research, conference presentations, and grant development leading to publication.

  • Ph.D. in Biology, Physiology, or a closely related field.
  • Demonstrated experience and commitment to student‑centered learning and teaching.
  • Evidence of high‑quality teaching and research with students.
  • Evidence of scholarly productivity.
  • Evidence of promoting the well‑being and advancement of students, colleagues, and the department.

Preferred Qualifications
  • Experience and commitment to excellence in teaching undergraduate biology at the university level.
  • Expertise in physiology in an area compatible with or broadening the department’s research activities.
  • Demonstrated teaching effectiveness in lower division labs or lectures.
  • Ability to establish and maintain a feasible research program at a primarily undergraduate institution.
  • Experience supervising student research and master’s theses.
