Job summary

Sonoma State University’s English Department seeks a tenure-track Assistant Professor in Creative Writing/Poetry starting August 2027. The successful candidate will teach undergraduate and graduate workshops, supervise M.A.

theses, and participate in general education offerings within the BA and MA programs. Requirements include an MFA in poetry or equivalent, a book publication, and a significant record in magazines; additional specialization outside traditional genres is welcomed.

Qualifications

• An M.F.A. in poetry or equivalent, with a strong commitment to university teaching.
• A book publication in poetry (minimum of one book with a nationally distributed press).
• Significant record of publication in nationally and internationally recognized magazines.
• An additional specialization in a genre outside of fiction, poetry, or creative nonfiction (e.g., screenwriting, multimedia, or gaming).
• Experience teaching at the university level.
• Experience in literary magazine production and editing.

Responsibilities

• Teach undergraduate and graduate workshops and general education courses.
• Supervise M.A. theses and participate in graduate applications review.
• Contribute to curriculum development and campus service activities.
• Engage in campus events such as Writers at Sonoma and the Sonoma Writers’ Festival.
