Job summary

San José State University’s Department of Design invites applications for a tenure-track Assistant Professor in Interior Design beginning Fall 2027. The position integrates professional practice with teaching across foundation studios, space planning, materials and construction, and digital tools, with emphasis on emerging technologies.

Qualifications

• Terminal degree (MFA/MIA in Interior Design, MDes, MArch, or PhD) completed before the start date.
• Experience teaching at the undergraduate college level.
• Active program of creative practice, interior design research, or scholarship with focus on emerging technologies and fabrication.

Responsibilities

• Teach undergraduate interior design curriculum, including foundation studios, space planning, materials and construction, and design electives.
• Develop and sustain an active program of research/creative practice focused on emerging technologies and fabrication.
• Mentor and advise undergraduate students in two interior design degree programs, including portfolio reviews.
• Support interior design program administration, logistics, spaces, and facilities.
• Participate in shared governance and service at program/department/university levels.
• Contribute to inclusive learning environments through diverse course materials and advising.
