Job description

Johns Hopkins University has made a major new investment (https://engineering.jhu.edu/news/major-investment-in-the-power-promise-of-data-science-artificial-intelligence/) in Data Science and AI. The investment will add 150 new faculty positions, including 30 Bloomberg Distinguished Professorships. The University has established the Data Science and AI Institute (https://ai.jhu.edu/) (DSAI Institute). A new half-million square foot building (https://jhfre.jhu.edu/capital-projects/projects/) is being constructed and an unparalleled computational infrastructure (https://ai.jhu.edu/about/compute-infrastructure/) is now operational . This expansion will establish Johns Hopkins as one of the largest and leading engineering schools with a top AI research program. The expansion will double the Department of Applied Mathematics and Statistics from 20 full-time regular faculty in 2023 to 40 by 2028.

This search is to fill faculty positions in the DSAI Institute. We invite applications for tenured or tenure-track faculty positions in all areas of the Mathematical Sciences. Preference will be given to candidates whose research has made an impact on data science, machine learning, and artificial intelligence. Outstanding candidates at all academic ranks will be considered. The successful candidate will have a tenure home in the Department of Applied Mathematics and Statistics. A joint appointment with another department is also possible. We anticipate making multiple offers.

Candidates must hold a Ph.D. in Applied Mathematics, Statistics, or related fields, and will be expected to establish a strong, independent, multidisciplinary, and internationally recognized research program. Commitment to teaching excellence at the undergraduate and graduate levels, and a dedication to creating an inclusive and supportive educational environment for all students is expected.

At Johns Hopkins, we value interdisciplinary collaboration. Faculty at the Whiting School of Engineering are united by a shared commitment to scientific discovery, teaching excellence, and transformative knowledge that contributes to the betterment of society. Successful candidates will find rich opportunities to engage with colleagues across the University, including the Data Science and AI Institute, the Mathematical Institute for Data Science, the SNF Agora Institute, the Carey Business School, Johns Hopkins School of Medicine, Krieger School of Arts and Sciences, Bloomberg School of Public Health, and Johns Hopkins Applied Physics Laboratory.

The expected salary range for this position is: Assistant Professors $160k-$200k, Associate Professors $180k-$250k, Full Professors $220k-$450k, for 12-month FTE. The referenced salary range is based on Johns Hopkins University's good faith belief at the time of posting. The actual compensation offered to the selected candidate may vary and will be based on factors including, but not limited to, the experience and qualifications of the selected candidate - e.g., years in rank, training, field, discipline, other work experience, and other similar factors; geographic location; internal equity; external market conditions; and other factors as reasonably determined by the University.

We offer dual career programs that support spousal/partner placement within the university and the broader Baltimore/Washington area.

Electronic applications should include a cover letter describing the principal expertise of the applicant, a statement of teaching interests, a statement of research interests, a complete resume, and a publication list. Applications at the Assistant Professor level should also include at least three reference letters. Applications at the Associate or Full Professor levels need not include reference letters or names at this stage.

Applications submitted by December 1, 2026, will receive full consideration. The department will begin reviewing applications on November 1, 2026 and may take early action to schedule fall semester interviews.

Salary: $160,000 - $450,000
