Job summary

The Department of East Asian Languages and Literatures at the University of Hawai at Manoa invites applications for a full-time, tenure-track Assistant Professor in Japanese Language Pedagogy to begin Fall 2027. The department offers BA degrees in Chinese, Japanese, and Korean; MA & PhD in East Asian Languages and Literatures.

The successful candidate will teach undergraduate and graduate courses, advise students, and contribute to scholarly research while engaging in service at multiple

Qualifications

• Ph.D. or equivalent degree in Japanese Language, Japanese Linguistics, or closely related field; ABD considered; must complete by August 2027.
• Demonstrated experience teaching at the college level.
• Demonstrated expertise in Japanese pedagogy.
• Evidence of scholarly activity in the field of specialization.
• High level of proficiency in Japanese and English.
• Ability to work effectively and collegially with students, faculty, staff and administrators.

Responsibilities

• Teach undergraduate content courses and Japanese language courses (introductory to advanced).
• Teach graduate courses in area of specialization.
• Advise and mentor undergraduate and graduate students.
• Serve on thesis/dissertation committees.
• Maintain an active agenda of scholarly research and publication in area(s) of specialization.
• Contribute service at the department, college, university, and community levels.
• Other duties as assigned by the Chair.
