We seek candidates who will help define the next generation ofmechanics, materials, the AI-native engineering of real-worldphysical systems, and how they connect with the future ofinfrastructure and the built environment. We are particularlyinterested in researchers who combine strong foundations inmechanics, materials, and physical modeling with moderncomputational and data-driven approaches, and who can create newengineering capabilities for infrastructure and physical systemsthat sense, learn, adapt, and interact with theirenvironment.
Areas of interest include, but are not limited to:
We are especially interested in candidates developing new materialsand mechanics systems for infrastructure beyond 2050, includingcomplex, adaptive, heterogeneous systems whose behavior emergesacross scales and for which classical closed-form models areinsufficient while physics remains essential for trustworthyprediction. Applications may include materials and systems forextreme environments such as data centers, nuclear reactors, andemerging geothermal systems, as well as living infrastructure andapproaches to mitigating infrastructure aging.
The successful candidate will have demonstrated excellence inoriginal research that advances knowledge in one or more core areasof Civil and Environmental Engineering and will contribute to theDepartment's programs in materials, mechanics, infrastructure, climate resilience, and energy transition. Faculty responsibilitiesinclude teaching at the undergraduate and graduate levels, advisingstudents, conducting original scholarly research, developing newand innovative teaching materials, and participating in theintellectual life of the Department.
