  • Performs work in conformance with building, health, and safety standards.

Description of Basic Functions and Responsibilities

Shasta College Physical Plant department is seeking to build a pool of qualified applicants for substitute Maintenance Plumber work. We will respond to applications based on our current needs.

Perform general skilled plumbing work involved in the maintenance, repair, and installation of campus equipment and facilities. Employees in this classification receive general supervision within a framework of standard policies and procedures. Employees in this classification may oversee and direct the work of others in the accomplishment of specific projects as assigned. This job class requires technical knowledge and skill related to the methods, procedures, materials, and equipment used in skilled plumbing work, as well as the ability to perform semi-skilled general maintenance operations. This job class functions at a journey level of classification.

Typical Duties
  • Performs general skilled plumbing work to service the plumbing maintenance, repair, and installation needs of the campus.
  • Repairs, adjusts, or replaces plumbing equipment and apparatus such as broken pipes, clogged waste lines, faucets and valves, lift pumps, and associated equipment.
  • Maintains waste water ponds, lift pumps, and associated equipment.
  • Lays out and installs new plumbing consisting of air lines, natural gas, propane gas, water, and drain lines.
  • Repairs or replaces defective hot water heaters, steam cleaners, pumps, and gas space heaters.
  • Repairs and maintains compressors.
  • Repairs and installs gas regulators.
  • Operates a backhoe, front-end loader, street sweeper, grader, or other heavy equipment.
  • Performs ARC welding as needed.
  • Performs cement and blacktop work.
  • Reads blueprints and makes minor changes on prints such as adding in new lines or deleting old lines.
  • Maintains records as assigned including waste water pond levels and lift pump recorder readings and prepares related reports.
  • Performs a variety of general semi-skilled maintenance, repair, and special project work and assistance as assigned.
  • Performs plumbing work in conformance with building, health, and safety standards.
  • Performs other related duties similar to the above in scope and function as required.
Knowledge of
  • Methods, procedures, materials, equipment, and tools used in skilled plumbing and carpentry work.
  • Safety rules, codes, and regulations applied to skilled plumbing and carpentry work.
Ability to
  • Perform skilled plumbing maintenance, installation, and repair work and semiskilled maintenance work in several areas of the building trades.
  • Read and interpret blueprints, sketches, and diagrams and to make minor changes as needed.
  • Maintain accurate records as assigned and to prepare related reports.
  • Understand and carry out a variety of complex instructions.
  • Use a variety of hand tools, power tools, and other equipment used for building maintenance purposes.
  • Quickly and effectively diagnose plumbing and carpentry needs and take appropriate action to meet same.
  • Effectively communicate in both oral and written forms.
  • Perform mathematical calculations using addition, subtraction, multiplication, and division.
  • Oversee and direct the work of others in a lead capacity as assigned.
  • Safely and effectively work on ladders, scaffolding, rigging, and roofs of varying heights.
  • Meet the physical requirements necessary to safely and effectively perform the required duties.
  • Establish and maintain effective work relationships with those contacted in the performance of required duties
Experience/Education
  • Five years of journeyman-level plumbing experience.
  • High school graduate or equivalent and appropriate training.
  • Waste water operator certificate or ability to obtain one within six months of employment.
Possession of
  • A valid and appropriate California Driver's License.
