Job summary

City of Austin is seeking a maintenance worker for street, bridge and concrete upkeep. The role involves learning preventive maintenance, operating heavy equipment, and performing landscape tasks across multiple locations.

You will respond to emergencies, document work and participate in ongoing training. Candidate must be able to read and follow instructions, work outdoors in varied weather, and communicate effectively with staff and the public.

Qualifications

  • Manual labor experience required.
  • Experience operating heavy equipment is preferred.
  • Willingness to learn and grow in a public works role.
  • Ability to read, write and follow written or verbal instructions.

Responsibilities

  • Learn preventive maintenance and minor repairs to keep equipment ready for use.
  • Operate and maintain gas/diesel/propane equipment and common tools.
  • Seal roadways, pour concrete, place asphalt and perform road maintenance tasks.
  • Perform landscape maintenance including trimming, mowing, seeding and erosion control.
  • Respond to emergencies and assist during floods, severe weather, and accidents.
  • Prepare daily documentation and timesheets.
  • Participate in on-the-job training to meet goals.
  • Assist citizens by providing information to resolve concerns.
  • Demonstrate safety regulations and safe operation of tools and equipment.
  • Learn TMUTCD provisions applicable to the job.
  • Learn new skills in street, bridge, and concrete maintenance.
  • Read and follow written, oral and computerized instructions; log timesheets and training.
  • Show improvement in finished maintenance with minimal rework.
  • Adapt to interruptions and changes in assignments.
  • Establish effective communication with city employees and the public.
  • Reliable transportation to travel to multiple work locations.
  • Work outdoors in inclement weather.

Job description

* Learns to perform preventive equipment maintenance, minor maintenance and repairs to ensure proper operating conditions prior to leaving for the job site (ex: checks oil, water, fuel, tires, hydraulic system, etc.). Reports malfunctions and repair requirements to the crew lead or supervisor.* Learns to operate and perform maintenance on gas/diesel/propane equipment (i.e., pneumatic jack hammer, air compressor, generator, chain saw, lawn mower, weed eater, lawn blower, hedge trimmer, gasoline tamper, walk-behind roller, arrow board, quickie cut-off saw).* Learn to seal roadway cracks, pour concrete, places hot or cold asphalt mix, and other materials required for general road maintenance and repairs.* Learns to perform landscape maintenance, including trimming trees, mowing grass, seeding, laying sod and erosion control.* Performs assigned tasks during emergency situations such as floods, severe weather, and accidents during regular business hours.* Prepares daily documentation and submits electronic timesheets and other forms as required.* Participates in on-the-job and skill-based training in order to meet team and department goals and objectives.* Responds to citizen requests by providing them with contact information to resolve their concerns.* Must possess required knowledge, skills, abilities, and experience and be able to explain and demonstrate, with or without reasonable accommodations, that the essential functions of the job can be performed.* Supervision and training will be provided so that incumbent may have the opportunity to acquire the knowledge, skills, and abilities to perform the essential functions of the job (with or without reasonable accommodations).* Knowledge of safety regulations and the ability to demonstrate safety requirements in the performance of assigned tasks to include the safe operation of hand and power tools, light/heavy equipment, and two way radios.* Ability to learn the Texas Manual of Uniform Traffic Control Devices (TMUTCD) provisions, as it relates to the job.* Ability to learn new skills in street, bridge, and concrete maintenance and repair.* Ability to read, write and follow written, oral and computerized instructions; log onto a computer, complete timesheets and on-line training.* Ability to show improvement in finished quality maintenance and repairs with minimum rework.* Ability to learn to adapt to frequent interruptions and changes in assignments.* Ability to establish and maintain effective communication and working relationships with city employees and the public.* Reliable transportation with the ability to regularly travel to more than one work location.* Ability to work outdoors in inclement weather.* Manual labor experience.* Heavy equipment experience.* Motivated learner with a growth mindset.A detailed and complete employment application is required to help us better evaluate your qualifications and will be **used to determine salary** if you are selected for this position.
