Job summary

Sylvania seeks a K-12 School Counselor to support Academic Achievement, College and Career Readiness, and Social/Emotional Learning at Riverside Intermediate School in Indiana. This role reports to the Building Principal with input from the Mental Health and School Counseling Coordinator.

Responsibilities include data-driven interventions, collaboration with staff and families, and ensuring equitable access to services.

  • Provide opportunities for students to develop work-related skills, resilience, and lifelong learning attitudes.
  • Create and maintain a safe, positive school climate where all students feel supported and valued.
  • Coordinate at tier 1-3 interventions and connect students with district/community services.

Position:

K-12 School Counselor

PERFORMANCE RESPONSIBILITIES:

Academic Achievement/Advising

  • Address student academic challenges or barriers with responsive interventions and strategies to lead all students to success.
  • Provide and engage students in appropriate guidance activities and resources that support academic decision making.
  • Affirm, support, and advocate for accommodations that support the learning needs of all students.
  • Utilize data to monitor student achievement while analyzing school-wide trends.
  • Assist students in effectively achieving the academic development competencies set forth by the school corporation and the State of Indiana.

College and Career Readiness

  • Address the career development competencies set forth by the school corporation and the State of Indiana.
  • Assist students in the understanding of the relationship between their academic ability and their future options.
  • Collaborate with administration, teachers, staff, and decision makers to create a culture of postsecondary readiness.
  • Provide opportunities for all students to develop the mindsets and behaviors necessary to learn work-related skills, resilience, perseverance, an understanding of lifelong learning as a part of long-term career success and a positive attitude toward learning.

Social and Emotional Learning and Mental Health

  • Assist in creating and maintaining a safe and positive school climate where all students feel supported, respected, and appreciated so that they can learn.
  • Provide interventions to students who display concern or seek support of adults.
  • Use data to determine needed interventions to individual, groups, and classrooms to close the information, attainment, achievement, and opportunity gap.
  • Collect and process data to measure the effectiveness of interventions provided to students.
  • Collaborate with all relevant stakeholders when student assistance is needed, including the identification of early warning signs in students experiencing distress.

Comprehensive School Counseling

  • Use building level data to develop and implement regular individual, group, and classroom guidance activities that support students in need.
  • Provide services and supports at tier 1, tier 2, and tier 3 to any student in need.
  • Ensure equity and inclusion of all students and families regardless of values, beliefs, sexual orientation, gender identity/expression, and cultural background.
  • Connect students (with parent involvement/permission) to services provided through the school district or community agencies/partners.

School Leadership:

  • Seek opportunities to support other staff members and/or students through coaching, discussion, and/or collaboration.
  • Participate in school improvement team and any other teams that support a positive school climate and culture.
PERSONAL AND PROFESSIONAL RESPONSIBILITIES:
  • Nurture a positive relationship with super-ordinates, subordinates and peers.
  • Demonstrate respect for super-ordinates, subordinates and peers.
  • Support corporation decisions and direction relative to matters of policy and administrative directives. Work as a team player.
  • Demonstrate ability to deal with sensitive issues in a tactful and professional manner.
  • Address concerns and offer suggestions in an appropriate and confidential manner.
TERMS:
  • Elementary School Counselor- 190 days certified contract
  • Intermediate School Counselor- 195 days certified contract
  • Junior High School Counselor- 205 days certified contract
  • High School Counselor- 205 days certified contract
  • Salary and benefits established annually by the professional agreement
