Calvert Marine Museum in Solomons, MD is seeking an Operator (Captain of Record) for its 65-foot passenger excursion vessels during May–October. The Captain of Record will operate the Wm. B.

Tennison or Dee of St. Mary’s on regularly scheduled cruises and private charters, ensuring safe navigation and compliance with USCG rules. Requirements include a high school diploma or GED, at least three years on passenger vessels, a US Coast Guard 50-ton operator’s license or higher, and a FCC marine

Qualifications

• Valid U.S. Coast Guard 50 ton operator’s license or above.
• FCC marine radio operator permit.
• Enrollment in mandatory random drug‑testing program.

Responsibilities

• Operate vessel on regularly scheduled cruises and private charters.
• Ensure safe operation per U.S. Coast Guard and Maryland regulations.
• Assist with Coast Guard inspections and vessel certifications.
• Maintain lifesaving and firefighting equipment in good condition.
• Supervise the mate and assist with pre-season fitting-out and post-season lay‑up.
• Keep logs, monitor supplies and maintenance.
• Interact with passengers to ensure public safety.
• Monitor fuel, weather, and shore operations.
• Comply with private charter arrangements.

Job description

Job Description: Operator (Captain of Record) of Calvert Marine Museum’s 65-foot passenger excursion vessels during regularly scheduled cruises and special charters. The Captain of Record is assigned to one of the historic vessel Wm. B. Tennison or Dee of St. Mary’s, docked at Calvert Marine Museum in Solomons, Maryland, which transits local waters of the Patuxent River and its tributaries. Captain is supervised by CMM Director or his designee.

Essential Job Functions

• Operates vessel on all regularly scheduled public cruises or private charters, during the season, May – October.
• Ensures safe operation of vessel at all times in accordance with all applicable U.S. Coast Guard and Maryland Marine Police regulations.
• Assists with Coast Guard inspections and ensures compliance with all inspection requirements for vessel certification.
• Ensures that all lifesaving and fire fighting equipment is operable and in good condition.
• Supervise the duties of the mate.
• Assists as necessary with pre-season fitting-out, routine maintenance during the operating season, and post-season lay‑up.

Other Duties

• Keeps track of supplies and monitors regular maintenance requirements.
• Ensures all materials aboard and ashore are properly and safely stored.
• Interacts with passengers as required to answer questions and ensure public safety.
• Monitors fuel requirements and ensures timely refueling and oil changes.
• Assists mate as necessary with loading and discharging of passengers.
• Monitors marine weather forecasts, and operates vessel accordingly, to ensure passenger safety.
• Assists county staff when necessary in planning long‑range maintenance and preservation, and in monitoring vessel operating procedures.
• Ensures full compliance with all private charter arrangements.
• Maintains logbook.
• Performs related work as required.

Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities (These are pre‑employment KSA that apply only to Essential Job Functions.)

• Knowledge of— Small craft operation and seamanship
• Basic marine engine operation and maintenance.
• Local navigable waters and weather conditions.
• U.S. Coast Guard requirements pertaining to small passenger vessel operation.
• Basic boat carpentry and painting.
• Radio communication procedures.
• Ability to— Handle small craft.
• Work well with public and staff.
• Speak clearly and distinctly.
• Perform manual work.
• Follow county purchasing procedures.

Required Qualifications (Note: Any acceptable combination of education, training and relevant experience that provides the above knowledge, abilities and skills may be substituted on a full‑time year for year basis.)

• Training and/or Education: High School diploma or GED equivalent.
• Experience: Minimum of three years experience on passenger‑carrying vessels.
• Licenses or Certificates: Valid U.S. Coast Guard 50 ton operator’s license or above.
• FCC marine radio operator permit.

Special Requirements: Enrollment in mandatory random drug‑testing program.

Physical Demands: Work requires long period of standing, repeated bending, crouching, stooping, stretching, reaching or lifting objects up to 49 pounds.

Unusual Demands: Required to work weekends and holidays, May–October.

FLSA Status: Exempt (during the season) and Non‑Exempt (during the off‑season).

Compensation Steps: Pay rate: $38.22 per hour Grade H24, temporary position, 17.5 hours per week
