Job summary

The City of Alexandria is seeking a Temporary Water Aerobics Instructor to lead structured water fitness sessions for adults, older adults, and teens. Responsibilities include guiding classes, assisting with participant evaluations, and upholding a safe, inclusive environment.

Applicants should have a high school diploma and multiple fitness certifications, with strong communication and leadership skills. Preference for morning availability; position is temporary and on‑site with the RPCA

Qualifications

• Must have High School Diploma.
• Minimum of three (3) years of related experience or equivalent.
• Must obtain Water Aerobics Instruction certification within 60 days of employment.
• Current Water Aerobics Instruction certification required.
• Two (2) or more years of experience instructing group fitness or wellness programs.
• CPR and First Aid certification are required.
• Knowledge of fitness assessment techniques and evidence‑based health practices.

Position Overview

The Water Aerobics Instructor plays a critical role in delivering structured, research-supported wellness programs specifically designed for adults, older adults, and teens. This role focuses on promoting healthy aging, physical activity, and social connection through evidence-based formats that have been approved. Responsibilities include leading classes, assisting with participant evaluations, and maintaining a safe and inclusive environment.

• Demonstrate strong communication, leadership, and motivational skills.
• Have experience leading water aerobics classes and/or programs
• Show ability to follow structured curricula and manage class logistics.
• Exhibit professionalism, punctuality, and a commitment to participant safety.
• Be comfortable with basic administrative tasks, including data tracking, scanning, and using digital tools.

The Department of Recreation, Parks & Cultural Activities (RPCA) enriches the lives of Alexandria residents through diverse programming, well-maintained public spaces, and inclusive cultural activities. RPCA is nationally accredited by the Commission for Accreditation of Park and Recreation Agencies (CAPRA), having met 155 rigorous best practice standards in the industry.

Additional Requirements

High School Diploma and three (3) years of related experience or any equivalent combination of experience and training which provides the required knowledge, skills, and abilities. First Aid training. Aqua Fitness Certification

Must obtain Water Aerobics Instruction certification within 60 days of employment.

Current certification in Water Aerobics Instruction. Two (2) or more years of experience instructing group fitness or wellness programs. CPR and First Aid certification. Knowledge of fitness assessment techniques, program modifications, and evidence-based health practices.

This position is subject to successfully passing a drug screening and background check.

Weekday morning availability is highly preferred to meet the needs of our most active senior participants.
