Job summary

University of Michigan's University Health and Counseling (UHC) Physical Therapy clinic is seeking a licensed Physical Therapist to assess, plan, and implement individualized treatment programs for patients with acute and chronic injuries.

The role includes supervising Physical Therapist Assistants and students, conducting initial exams and re-evaluations, and coordinating discharge planning. Hybrid/mobile options may be available; typical hours are 8 am–5 pm, Monday–Friday.

Qualifications

• Bachelor's degree in Physical Therapy or equivalent post Baccalaureate degree in Physical Therapy.
• Current licensure as a Physical Therapist in the State of Michigan.
• Minimum of 3 years of experience as a Physical Therapist with concentration in advanced outpatient Orthopedic or Sports Medicine physical therapy practice.

Responsibilities

• Perform and document an initial patient exam to identify dysfunction, determine a PT diagnosis, and establish plans and goals for treatment.
• Perform and document periodic re-evaluations and modify PT programs to achieve maximum benefit.
• Plan, prepare, and carry out individually designed PT programs using therapeutic exercise, modalities, manual therapy, education, and self-management.
• Discharge patients from PT and provide for follow up care or referrals as needed.
• Delegate portions of PT treatment to PTAs as appropriate and co-sign PTA notes.
• Keep current in clinical practice and changes in the profession.
• Prepare and conduct in-service educational programs related to physical therapy.
• Supervise PTAs when patient care is delegated to the PTA. Educate PTA as needed on preferred exercises and treatment techniques.

The physical therapy department staff includes physical therapists, physical therapist assistants, student volunteers and student employees who provide clinic support, and clerical staff.

Position Summary:

To assess, plan, and implement individualized physical therapy treatment programs for patients with acute and chronic injuries, diseases, disorders, and disabilities to relieve pain, develop or restore physical function, wellness, fitness, and quality of life as it relates to movement and health, as prescribed by the referring clinician. To delegate to and supervise Physical Therapist Assistants (PTAs). To supervise Physical Therapy students in their clinical internships at UHS.

Responsibilities*

• Perform and document an initial patient exam using diagnostic and prognostic muscle, joint, nerve, and functional ability tests in order to identify dysfunction, determine a physical therapy diagnosis, and establish plans and goals for treatment.
• Obtain patient's consent to physical therapy plan of care and goals.
• Perform and document periodic re-evaluations and modify physical therapy programs to achieve maximum benefit.
• Plan, prepare, and carry out individually designed physical therapy programs using appropriate interventions such as therapeutic exercise, modalities, manual therapy, education, and self- management.
• Discharge patients from physical therapy when goals or desired outcomes are attained and provide for follow up care or referrals as needed.
• Delegate portions of physical therapy treatment to Physical Therapist Assistants (PTA) as appropriate and co-sign PTA notes.
• Keep current in clinical practice and changes in the profession.

Teaching: 5%

• Prepare and conduct in-service educational programs related to physical therapy.
• Supervise Physical Therapist Assistants when patient care is delegated to the PTA. Educate PTA as needed on preferred exercises and treatment techniques.

Modes of Work

Selected candidates whose start date is between 4/1/2026 - 9/1/2026 will not be eligible for the university FY26-27 salary/merit plan unless otherwise notified.

Salary may vary depending on qualifications, experience, and education of the selected candidate.

Relocation will not be offered for this role.

Working Conditions:

Physical Therapy clinic hours are 8 am to 5 pm Monday- Friday. Part-time hours are to be agreed upon by the candidate and supervisor in the time window of clinic hours.

Physical Requirements:

Able to move and transport patients or objects weighing 25lbs.
