Job summary

City of Austin is offering an Intern – Graduate position in Austin’s Public Library system. The role provides hands-on experience in archival work, research support, and customer service through the Reference and Access Team.

You will assist archivists, learn archival practices, and gain exposure to cataloging, sorting materials, and answering inquiries in a public-facing environment.

Qualifications

  • Knowledge of Federal, State, and Local laws and ordinances.
  • Knowledge of applicable processes, techniques, and methods.
  • Knowledge of City practices, policies, and procedures.
  • Knowledge of statistical analysis.
  • Skill in oral and written communication.

  • Ability to work with minimal supervision.
  • Ability to operate a computer keyboard and other basic office equipment.
  • Ability to communicate clearly and effectively.
  • Ability to create clear and concise reports.
  • Ability to establish and maintain effective communication and working relationships with City employees and the public.

Responsibilities

  • Assists archivists with maintaining archival collections and providing customer service and research support.
  • Sorts manuscripts, books, publications, and other materials according to established procedures and returns them to shelves or designated areas.
  • Helps the public use the collections by explaining available resources and how to locate information.
  • Communicates and enforces library policies and procedures for staff and patrons.
  • Responds to routine inquiries and directs patrons to archivists when professional assistance is needed.
  • Locates archival and library materials for patrons, including manuscripts, archival records, architectural documents, photographs, maps, audiovisual items, books, and periodicals.
  • Performs clerical tasks such as answering phones, sorting mail, filing, typing, photocopying, and preparing outgoing materials.

Job description

Intern – Graduate

Purpose: Under general supervision, this position assists in general administrative or research functions to develop a working knowledge of a targeted area in municipal government related to benchmarked professional positions, performing advanced internship duties.

Duties, Functions and Responsibilities
  • Observes and assists professionals in the assigned department to learn about areas of career interest.
  • Conducts research, collects and organizes data, performs analyses, and prepares reports to supplement knowledge gained through academic courses.
  • Proposes solutions to existing problems and discusses recommendations with administrative personnel to acquire skills in problem solving.
  • Is responsible for special projects as assigned.
  • Leads, as necessary, in the coordination, administration, or monitoring of specific programs.

Minimum Qualifications
  • Enrolled in an accredited college or university graduate degree program, with some advanced coursework related to the internship program.
Preferred Qualifications
  • Knowledge of archival standards, issues, practices, and trends.
  • Knowledge of reference tools and procedures.
  • Skill in using standards for archival description.
  • Experience providing quality customer service in a public-facing environment.
  • Ability to carry out detailed and repetitive tasks while remaining focused and meeting established timelines.
  • Ability to manage and switch work tasks to meet customer and department needs.
  • Experience working with diverse populations and customers of all ages.
  • Graduation from an accredited four (4) year college or university.
  • Current enrollment in a graduate degree program in Library/Information Science, with a concentration in Archival Enterprise, History, or Public History.

Salary Range

$22.15 per hour

Hours and Schedule

20 hours weekly (Afternoons), Wednesday - Saturday. Visit the Austin Public Library for library hours per location.
