Job Description

The Nebraska Department of Transportation is now hiring summer temporary maintenance workers! Whether you're looking for temporary work for extra income through the summer months or testing out a new position prior to making a long-term commitment, we encourage you to apply! Pay rate of $19.502 per hour to start. If utilized by the Agency, and at the discretion of the District, those who currently possess a CDL may be promoted to the Worker Senior level at the rate of $20.998 per hour.

D6 Work Locations hiring in west central Nebraska include North Platte, Wallace, Broken Bow, Ansley, Oconto, Lexington, Gothenburg, Mullen, Arthur, Hyannis, Stapleton, Thedford, Ogallala, Big Springs. Positions are summer, temporary, until November 30, 2025. Hours may vary depending on weather conditions, and may be more or less than 40 hours per week.

Job Duties

Join NDOT as a teammate! Our teams perform remote work at various locations, including operating tractors and mowers, performing pavement preservation, traffic control, roadside feature repairs, and assisting in maintaining the highway system. Responsibilities include roadway striping, fence repair, sign maintenance, pavement, culvert, or bridge repairs, manual traffic control, installing temporary signs, responding to emergencies, fleet maintenance, and safety compliance. Drive department vehicles or equipment as trained, and perform other related duties.

Requirements / Qualifications:

Minimum Qualifications

- Highway Maintenance Worker: Must be at least 18 years old and possess a valid driver's license.

- Highway Maintenance Worker/Senior: Must be at least 18, possess a valid driver's license, and have a Class A or B Commercial Driver's License with air brakes and tanker endorsements within 60 days of employment.

Preferred Qualifications: A valid Class A or B Commercial Driver's License, heavy equipment experience, and willingness to travel out of town overnight. Reliable attendance is required.

Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities:

Ability to safely lift or move 35-60 pounds frequently, up to 90+ pounds with assistance; climb, bend, work in outdoor extremes, and around high-speed traffic. Must be able to respond to emergency calls within 30 minutes outside scheduled hours.
