Job summary

State of Nebraska is hiring winter Temporary Highway Maintenance Workers for Norfolk & surrounding areas, with duties including snow removal and heavy equipment operation. Start pay is $20.39/hr; CDL holders begin at $21.95/hr.

Positions run through March 31, 2027, with flexible hours based on weather and conditions.

Qualifications

• Highway Maintenance Worker: must be at least 18 years old and possess a valid driver’s license.
• Senior: must be at least 20 years old, possess a valid driver’s license, and have a Class A or B CDL with air brakes and tanker endorsements within 60 days of employment.
• Preferred: a valid Class A or B CDL and experience operating heavy equipment.

Responsibilities

• Perform snow removal.
• Operate heavy equipment for road maintenance.
• Trim trees.
• Respond to highway emergencies.
• Move, load, unload equipment, materials and supplies safely within weight restrictions.
• Spread surfacing materials and perform other duties as assigned.

Job Description

We are now hiring winter temporary maintenance workers! Whether you’re looking for temporary work for extra income through the winter months or looking to test out a new position prior to making a long-term commitment, we encourage you to apply! Pay rate of $20.390 to start. Those that possess a current and valid CDL will start at $21.953 and will assist in winter operations and snow removal.

Hiring Locations: Albion, Bloomfield, Clarkson, Columbus, Crofton, Hartington, Humphrey, Laurel, Lyons, Neligh, Newcastle, Niobrara, Norfolk, Plainview, Dakota City, Wayne, and West Point. Winter positions, temporary, until March 31, 2027. Hours may depend on the weather, may be more or less than 40 hours per week.

Job Duties

• Perform snow removal.
• Perform heavy equipment operation for road maintenance.
• Perform tree trimming.
• Respond to highway emergencies.
• Safely move, drag, lift, load, and unload various equipment, materials, supplies, and hazardous materials or objects from the roadway within weight restrictions.
• Spread and tamp surfacing materials.
• Perform other duties as assigned.

Requirements / Qualifications

Minimum Qualifications:

Highway Maintenance Worker: Must be at least 18 years of age and possess a valid driver’s license.

Highway Maintenance Worker/ Senior: Must be at least 20 years of age and possess a valid driver’s license, and possession of a Class A or B Commercial Driver’s License with air brakes and tanker endorsements is required within 60 days of employment.

Preferred Qualifications: A valid Class A or B Commercial driver's license. Experience in the operation of heavy equipment.

Other: May require out of town, overnight travel. Regular and reliable attendance is also required. Must be able to be reached to report to work outside scheduled work hours for highway emergencies within a specified time frame.

Knowledge, Skills And Abilities

Must be able to safely move, drag, lift 35 pounds frequently, up to 60 pounds occasionally (without assistance), and 90 or more pounds infrequently (with assistance); climb, bend or stoop; work in outdoor temperature extremes and work around high speed traffic.
