Job summary

The University of Kansas, through KFRTI, seeks a qualified instructor to deliver fire service training across multiple programs. The role may serve as lead instructor, assistant instructor, or safety officer when qualified, coordinating with program coordinators and managers.

Qualifications

  • High school diploma plus five years of progressive experience conducting/ providing fire service training.
  • Incident Command System Training: ICs 100 and 200.
  • IFSAC and/or Pro Board Firefighter I & II certification or equivalent as determined by the Institute.
  • IFSAC and/or Pro Board Fire Instructor I certification within 1 year of hire.
  • Two years of fire and emergency services Instructional experience (80 hours per year).
  • IFSAC and/or Pro Board Certification in the subject(s) to be taught, if applicable.
  • Physical ability to perform the tasks associated with the instruction and evaluation processes.

Responsibilities

  • Instruct KFRTI training programs as lead instructor, assistant instructor, or safety officer if qualified.
  • Coordinate with program coordinators and managers.
  • Deliver a variety of fire service courses through traveling instruction.
  • Provide temporary assistance in research, project or program activities as needed.
  • Work up to 999 hours per calendar year.

Job description

Position Overview

This position is responsible for instructing a variety of fire service programs and courses offered by the Kansas Fire & Rescue Training Institute (KFRTI). They will serve as the lead instructor, assistant instructor, or safety officer (if qualified) to deliver KFRTI training programs. This position coordinates and collaborates with program coordinators and managers and reports to an assigned training program coordinator or manager.

Kansas Fire & Rescue Training Institute is a KU Lifelong and Professional Education (LPE) unit. The Institute was created in 1949 by the Kansas legislature with the mission to train and credential Kansas firefighters in local jurisdictions. The Institute serves fire departments and firefighters through a "traveling instruction service," providing hundreds of training and certification events each year in counties across the State.

The mission of the Kansas Fire & Rescue Training Institute is to provide accessible, comprehensive training and credentialing for fire and emergency response personnel to promote health and safety in Kansas communities

Job Description

Positions will provide temporary assistance in a variety of areas. Work may include, but is not limited to research, project or program assistance, and grant assistance. Work is completed within 999 hours per a calendar year.

Required Qualifications
  1. High school diploma plus five years of progressive experience conducting/ providing fire service training.

Preferred Qualifications
  1. IFSAC and/or Pro Board (or) FDSO Certification or National Fire Academy course completion for NFPA 1521 Fire Department Safety Officer Certification
  2. IFSAC and/or Pro Board Fire Instructor II certification.
  3. Three years of fire and emergency services Instructional experience (80 hours per year)
  4. Consistent record of positive course and instructor evaluations from students.
  5. Demonstrated willingness to stay apprised of current, relevant research data and evolving best practices for subject areas
  6. IFSAC and/or Pro Board Live Fire Instructor certification (or)International Society of Fire Service Instructors Live Fire Training Instructor credential (or) KFRTI KS Live Fire Instructor course.
  7. Associate or bachelor's degree.
