Job description

Barrier Free Living (BFL) is dedicated to helping New Yorkers with disabilities live independently in the community. BFL provides a broad range of residential (Freedom House) and community-based (The Secret Garden) services, which support domestic violence (DV) survivors with disabilities. Freedom House (FH) is BFL’s emergency shelter for domestic violence survivors with or without disabilities. It accepts women, children, and men. Its programs include individual counseling for adults and children, support groups, safety planning, case management, housing assistance, occupational therapy, financial clinic services, onsite childcare, and advocacy within medical, mental health, child welfare, law enforcement, and criminal justice systems.

Barrier Free Living is seeking qualified applicants to join our team. This position reports to the Director of Childcare/Recreation and performs the following duties:

Requirements:
  • Work in-person: 5 days a week, 9 am - 5 pm. Occasional weekends or late days for planned activities.
  • Preferably 2 years of experience working with children in an educational setting (school, daycare, Head Start, nursery).
  • Ability to work with children of all ages.
  • Experience working with children with disabilities and/or trauma history such as domestic violence, developmental disabilities, physical disabilities, etc.
  • Bilingual Spanish/English/ASL knowledge is a plus.
  • Minimum requirement: High School Diploma.
  • Must be 18 years or older.
  • Engage children in recreational and play activities indoors and outdoors.
  • Facilitate individual and group recreational activities throughout the week.
  • Clean interactive areas throughout the day.
  • Keep records of each child's progress and any issues that occur at the family center.
  • Computer literate.
  • Communicate with parents regarding their children's participation, addressing issues like separation anxiety, emergencies, or concerns.
  • Work collaboratively with a multidisciplinary team and participate in department meetings.
  • Occasionally pick up children from school.
  • Excellent communication and interpersonal skills.
  • CPR/First Aid certification is a plus; training will be provided if not already certified.

  • Start Date: ASAP
  • Hourly Rate: $17.50
  • Status: Full Time / Non-Exempt (Temporary)
  • Hours per week: 35
  • Schedule: 5 days per week, 9 am - 5 pm
