The Organization

The Port of Olympia is governed by an elected Commission, which sets policies and strategic direction for the organization. The Commission appoints the Port’s Executive Director, who is responsible for the ongoing management of the Port’s staff, operations, budget, enterprises, and facilities. The PositionThe Boatyard and Maintenance and Grounds Assistant will help in the day-to-day operations at Swantown Boatworks and Marina grounds. They are expected to assist with the Boatyard equipment, including the forklifts, vehicles, pressure washer, shop, and hand tools. The Assistant will also maintain Boatyard cleanliness and enforce environmental policy compliance by customers, employees, and contractors. Performs vessel haulout, launching, and pressure washing activities. Will assist and perform boatyard cleanup and maintenance activities, and perform other boatyard business activities, which include assisting customers and general office duties. When directed, they will report to maintenance for various routine and project maintenance tasks coordinated by the maintenance lead.
Examples of Duties
The duties include, but are not limited to, the following and may be dependent upon experience level:
- Entry-level operator of boatyard equipment.
- Represent the Port when communicating with customers, vendors, tenants, concessionaires, governmental/tribal agencies, and members of the general public.
- Assists and performs vessel haulouts, blocking, storage, mast and engine removals, and pressure washing activities.
- Assists with maintaining the Electro-coagulation Wastewater Treatment facility to ensure proper treatment.
- Operate Port equipment to include forklift, pressure washer, environmental compliance equipment, and shop and hand tools.
- Maintain and repair buildings, shop, yard, docks, and Port equipment.
- Perform daily cleaning activities at the boatyard, docks, offices, and other public areas as necessary.
- Assist with scheduling customer haulouts, launches, and other marine service activities in the boatyard.
- Provide assistance to customers in the docking and securing of vessels.
- Identify, collect, store, and record hazardous waste materials collected by the Port.
- Ensures customers and Marine Trade vendors keep in compliance with state safety and environmental laws and Port rules and regulations.
- Assist with the collection and daily processing of Boatworks revenues.
- Perform various assigned maintenance duties at Port Properties and Facilities.
- Performs janitorial duties; assignments may include, but are not limited to, graffiti removal, power washing, garbage disposal, and maintaining the cleanliness of warehouse/shop spaces.
- Perform general groundskeeping and landscaping maintenance, including mowing, trimming, weeding, irrigation repair, shoveling, and raking. Depending on experience, equipment operation and upkeep may include riding lawnmowers and/or tractors.
- Work variable hours, weekends, and holidays as required by the demands of the job.
Qualifications
Minimum Qualification (Experience / Education)
- Must pass a background check and drug screening.
- 18 years of age or older preferred – applicants under 18 must meet additional requirements.
- Must possess a valid Washington State driver's license and a driving record acceptable to the Port of Olympia insurance carrier.
Required Knowledge / Skills / Abilities- Be a self-starter – this quality is more important than overall experience and skill level. The necessary training will be provided to anyone who regularly maintains a motivated and positive attitude.
- Must be punctual, flexible, reliable, and responsible.
- Must demonstrate basic mechanical aptitude.
- Must possess a strong sense of customer service.
- Must understand and embrace the importance of workplace safety, adhering to all Port policies with a keen ability to take instructions and deliver results.
- Must be able to work effectively and flexibly as an integral member of the team.
- Must be able to satisfactorily perform essential maintenance and groundskeeping projects.
- Must demonstrate proficiency in operating the necessary equipment: electric, gas, diesel, and various hand/power tools.
- Must be able to accept work assignments in all types of weather, with medium to heavy work requiring prolonged or repeated standing, walking, climbing, stooping, kneeling, crouching, and lifting 30 to 50 lbs.
- Must maintain the level of physical and mental fitness necessary to perform the position's essential functions
