Job summary

The Metropolitan Transportation Authority seeks a Deputy Executive Assistant General Counsel/Assistant General Counsel to support outside counsel and in-house attorneys handling tort claims. The role demands independence and collaboration within a litigation team to implement strategies reducing tort exposure.

The position is temporary for 1 year, with a telework option of one day per week and a minimum of 20 hours per week (up to 37.5). Work location: 130 Livingston Street, Brooklyn, NY.

Qualifications

• Graduated from an ABA accredited law school (or expected graduation by time of start date).
• Admission to the New York State Bar.

Responsibilities

• Handle personal injury and property damage claims during all phases of litigation, including hearings, depositions, discovery, motions, conferences, settlements, and trials.
• Conduct legal research; draft pleadings, discovery responses, motions, memoranda, and internal reports; handle court appearances including status and settlement conferences, oral arguments, trials; attend mediations.
• Assist in assessing liability and damages exposures and make and review appropriate reserve and settlement recommendations.
• Assist in the business goals of the MTA Legal Dept. in whatever manner as required by the General Counsel and Deputy General Counsel Torts.
