Job description

About Us:

The City of Glendale Parks and Recreation Department is divided into two main areas:

  1. The Parks Division manages and maintains all public parks, open spaces, trails, storm water retention basins, landscaping at municipal facilities, and Thunderbird Conservation Park. It also monitors and ensures the safety and security of park and facility use.
  2. The Recreation Division offers programs and facilities to enhance the social, physical, mental, and economic health of the community. Programs are held at various locations including the Foothills Recreation and Aquatics Center, the Glendale Adult Center, Historic Sahuaro Ranch, community centers, and other recreational facilities throughout the city.
The Role:

Plans, organizes, conducts, and directs a variety of professional recreational activities at a recreation facility or park site.

Additional Information:

Position Overview: This part-time position requires availability to work any day of the week, including weekends, evenings, and holidays.

  • Typical Work Schedule: Tuesday through Saturday, 9 a.m. to 7 p.m.
  • Hours: 40 hours per week
  • Hourly rate: $31.8578
  • FLSA status: Non-exempt (eligible for overtime)
  • Sick Time: Accrues at 0.034 hours per hour paid

Retirement: Participation in the Arizona State Retirement System (ASRS) with a current contribution rate of 12.27%. Contributions are mandatory and deducted each pay period.

Responsibilities:
  • Coordinate, schedule, and supervise year-round aquatic programs and events, including swim classes and waterpark operations.
  • Develop marketing materials, train staff, schedule facility rentals, and collaborate with local schools and communities.
  • Manage program budgets and organize seasonal hiring.
  • Plan and direct recreational activities in areas such as aquatics, sports, arts, and special events.
  • Utilize technology effectively for program management and marketing.
  • Support participant registration and supervise staff and volunteers.
  • Ensure facilities and equipment meet safety and operational standards.
  • Maintain records, prepare reports, and perform related duties as assigned.
Qualifications:

Bachelor’s degree in recreation, leisure services, education, or related fields, or equivalent experience. Three years of relevant experience may substitute for education.

Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities:
  • Knowledge of aquatics operations, safety, and program planning.
  • Skills in supervising recreational activities, operating equipment, and communicating effectively.
  • Ability to monitor staff, operate computers, prepare reports, and build relationships.
Special Requirements:
  • Certifications in Lifeguard, First Aid, CPR & AED through the American Red Cross or equivalent, valid through September 2025.
  • Current or previous StarGuard certification is acceptable; cross-over to ARC certifications upon hire.
  • Ability to read, write, and speak English; Spanish skills are preferred.
  • Proficiency with technology and maintaining certifications.
Physical Requirements:
  • Ability to hear, see, lift over 50 pounds, and perform rescue operations.
  • Position may involve exposure to heat, noise, sun, and weather extremes.
