Job summary

Oakland Zoo is seeking a Float Animal Keeper to join the ACCR team. This full-time temporary role involves caring for a diverse group of species, promoting their physical health and psychological well-being, and supporting the primary keeper when needed.

Starting October 1, 2026, with an anticipated end date of April 1, 2027, the position pays $27.05 per hour and requires flexibility for weekends, evenings, and holidays; commitment to safety and wildlife welfare is essential.

Qualifications

• Minimum 6 months full-time or 1040 hours experience in care of captive wildlife (AZA or GFAS facility preferred).
• Valid Driver's License with clean driving record per insurance requirements.
• Willingness to work outside normal hours including weekends, evenings and holidays.
• Medical: negative TB test within last year, tetanus vaccine within last 10 years.

Responsibilities

• Use observation, enrichment, training and other management methods to support animal well-being.
• Assess physical and psycho-social needs and design steps to address them.
• Implement Zoo priorities and seek ways to improve practices.
• Guide and support junior staff and volunteers as appropriate.
• Represent the Zoo in public settings, interviews and with guests.
• Perform other duties as required.
