The City of Pleasanton is excited to announce an opportunity for a dedicated individual to join our team as a Water Exercise Instructor in the Library and Recreation Department. In this part-time, temporary role, you will lead engaging deep- and shallow-water exercise classes for the City’s active adult community. The regular Wednesday morning assignment includes classes from 7:30–8:25 a.m. and 8:45–9:40 a.m., with opportunities to serve as a substitute instructor for additional weekday morning and evening classes. We're Looking for Someone Who Is
- Experienced and confident teaching both deep- and shallow-water exercise classes.
- Certified through the Aquatic Exercise Association (AEA), or otherwise appropriately qualified to lead safe and effective aquatic fitness instruction.
- Energetic, encouraging, and able to create a welcoming experience for participants of varying fitness levels.
- Customer service-minded, with the ability to communicate effectively and courteously with participants, coworkers, and supervisors.
- Dependable, adaptable, and comfortable working independently while maintaining a safe and positive class environment.
- Prepared to teach outdoors in changing weather conditions, as classes are generally held rain or shine unless conditions are extreme.
In This Role, You Will
- Lead scheduled deep- and shallow-water exercise classes on Wednesday mornings.
- Serve as a substitute instructor for Monday and Friday morning classes, as well as classes offered Monday through Thursday in the evening, as needed.
- Develop and lead safe, effective, and engaging aquatic fitness routines for active adult participants.
- Provide clear instruction, encouragement, and modifications to support participants with varying abilities and fitness levels.
- Monitor participants and the pool environment to promote safe class participation.
- Create a cheerful, inclusive, and professional atmosphere that encourages continued recreation and wellness participation.
- Respond professionally to changing attendance levels, participant needs, and program expectations.

The Ideal Candidate Will Be
- Experienced in instructing water exercise or aquatic fitness classes, including both deep- and shallow-water formats.
- A current Aquatic Exercise Association (AEA) certification holder.
- Knowledgeable about safe aquatic fitness practices, exercise modifications, and participant engagement techniques.
- Able to communicate instructions clearly and provide positive, encouraging feedback.
- Dependable, organized, and available to maintain the Wednesday morning class schedule and provide substitute coverage as needed.
- Professional, enthusiastic, and committed to delivering excellent customer service to the City’s recreation participants.
- Preferred to have Lifeguard, CPR/AED and First Aid certification
Education and Experience:
