Job summary

The University of New Mexico‑Gallup is seeking qualified temporary part‑time adjunct faculty to teach lower division courses (1000/2000 level) at the Gallup Branch. Instructors are responsible for class preparation, delivery, grading, reporting grades, and assessing student learning under the supervision of the division chair.

Positions are contingent on need and enrollment, with compensation per credit hour. Best Consideration dates are listed for Spring 2026 and Summer/Fall 2026 semesters.

Qualifications

  • Master’s degree in relevant fields or 18 graduate credit hours in listed fields.
  • Doctorate preferred with college‑level teaching experience.
  • Commitment to cultivate understanding of the cultures of New Mexico and to serve the university’s mission.

Responsibilities

  • Teach lower division courses (1000/2000 level) in face‑to‑face and/or online formats during Spring, Summer, and Fall 2026.
  • Deliver content, develop assignments, grade, report grades, and assess student learning as directed by the division chair.
  • Manage classes including meetings that may occur evenings or weekends.
  • Report to the division chair and be contingent on enrollment and course offerings each semester.

Education

Master’s degree in African Studies, American Studies, Classical Studies, History, the Humanities, International Studies, Native American Studies, Philosophy, Religion, or a related field
Master’s degree plus 18 graduate credit hours in listed fields

UNM Gallup is a two-year branch campus of the University of New Mexico located approximately 138 miles west of Albuquerque. The University of New Mexico established branch colleges to provide the highest quality of education for students pursuing post-secondary education at different locations throughout the state. Branch colleges respond specifically to the unique needs and multicultural backgrounds of their respective communities by offering community education programs, career and technical education including certificate and associate degree programs, and transfer programs that prepare students for upper division entry into colleges and universities.

The Liberal Arts & Education Division at UNM Gallup Branch is seeking qualified temporary part-time faculty members to teach lower division classes in various courses or topics as specified above. UNM Gallup instructors are responsible for all aspects of any class they are teaching including but not limited to meeting face-to-face with the class during assigned times that may include evenings or weekends, content delivery, assignment development, grading assignments, reporting of grades, and assessment of student learning as outlined by the division chair.

Positions are contingent upon need each semester as determined by student enrollment levels, current course offering matrix, and demand driven by graduation requirements. Positions may be filled or eliminated each semester up to the deadline for students to drop or add courses. Candidates who are selected for these positions will report to the division chair.

Adjunct Faculty are currently compensated on the basis of their credentials and credit hour course loads. Salary range: $1,135.26 - $1,228.24 per credit hour.

January 15, 2026 for Summer and Fall 2026 Semesters

Minimum Qualifications
  • Master’s degree in African Studies, American Studies, Classical Studies, History, the Humanities, International Studies, Native American Studies, Philosophy, Religion, or a related field; or a Master’s degree and 18 graduate credit hours in any of those fields previously listed
Preferred Qualifications
  • Doctorate degree in African Studies, American Studies, Classical Studies, History, the Humanities, International Studies, Native American Studies, Philosophy, Religion, or a related field, and college-level teaching experience
  • A demonstrated commitment to cultivate an understanding of the rich and varied cultures of New Mexico and to the success of the university's mission to serve local and global communities

Applicants who are appointed to a UNM faculty position are required to provide an official certification of successful completion of all degree requirements prior to their initial employment with UNM.
