Job summary

Commonwealth of Pennsylvania—Pennsylvania Department of Transportation seeks a Transportation Construction Inspector to inspect materials used in road and bridge work, ensuring they meet quality standards. You will document testing, verify gradation and other tests, and help maintain records for district projects.

The role emphasizes attention to detail, field inspections at asphalt/concrete plants, and coordination with vendors.

Qualifications

• Three years of experience in highway or bridge surveying, design, construction, or inspection work.
• Three years of experience in quality control of materials or building or construction industry experience, which includes reading and interpreting blueprints, plans, or schematics.
• One year as an Engineering Technician (Commonwealth job title or equivalent Federal Government job title, as determined by the Office of Administration).
• Two years as a Transportation Technician or Construction Cost Technician 1 (Commonwealth job title or equivalent Federal Government job title, as determined by the Office of Administration).
• One year of construction inspection experience, and an associate's degree in civil engineering, mechanical engineering, geotechnical engineering, surveying engineering technology, or a closely related engineering technology;
• An equivalent combination of experience and training.

Responsibilities

• Material Inspection: Check materials at production plants to verify compliance with specifications and quality control requirements
• Test Accuracy: Review testing procedures to make sure methods align with regulatory organizations' standards
• Quality Observation: Observe material shipments and confirm that weigh slips and delivered materials are correct
• Documentation Review: Record sampling techniques accurately and report issues to supervisors as needed
• Compliance Checks: Evaluate supplier testing practices including gradation, absorption, air content, and other standard tests
• System Entry: Enter sampling and testing information into a database and maintain required documentation systems
