Job Duties
  • Channels all incoming calls and provides direct numbers as needed; connects inside callers with local and out-of-state numbers using a PC/Windows-based console.
  • Provides paging services: overhead, beepers, fire alerts, codes, traumas, disasters.
  • Takes messages from emergency calls, reports problems to the appropriate department, and enters information in the logbook. Follows written guidelines for further instructions.
  • Provides telephone and communication services during emergencies according to hospital policies (e.g., codes, traumas, disasters, bomb threats).
  • Picks up various lists (e.g., Ambulatory Surgery, OR, physician schedules), announcements (e.g., seminars, meetings) daily; familiarizes self with contents to provide accurate information to callers.
  • Assists in training new telephone personnel by answering questions and explaining systems.
  • Maintains departmental logs, fire alarms, and records unusual situations in a designated log.
  • Adheres to the Medical Center’s Code of Conduct and maintains knowledge of its Mission, Vision, and Values.
  • Follows departmental policies, procedures, quality assurance, safety, environmental, and infection control standards.
  • Provides excellent customer service: respectful, flexible, knowledgeable, confident, professional, pleasant, patient, and helpful. Responses are timely, professional, and caring.
Other Job Duties
  • In the absence of the Lead Telephone Operator, operates the telephone repair line, reports issues, and maintains communication with the Telephone Technician.
  • Maintains cleanliness and organization of the work area.
  • Performs related duties as assigned.
Basic Competencies
  • Education: High School Diploma or equivalent required.
  • Experience: At least 1 year of experience as a Telephone Operator on a heavy-volume switchboard (preferably in a hospital); 2-3 years preferred.
  • Skills: Good PC/keyboard skills, strong oral and interpersonal communication skills, proficiency in English, second language a plus.
Job Setting
  • Telecommunications office with contact with staff, patients, and the public via phone and in person.
  • Mostly sedentary; requires visual acuity and manual dexterity to operate the PC console and file.
