TELEMATICS INSTALLATION TECHNICIAN

Department: Fleet & Maintenance

Classification: Full-Time, Non-Exempt

Schedule: Monday to Friday – Shop Schedule

Pay Range: $20.00 - $25.00 per hour

Position Summary

Ecology Auto Parts, Inc. is seeking a hands-on Telematics Installation Technician to install, maintain, troubleshoot, and repair GPS and related fleet-technology systems on commercial tractors, trailers, trucks, and other company equipment. This position combines automotive electrical work with fleet technology and is responsible for ensuring installed devices receive reliable power, communicate correctly, and remain securely mounted and operational in demanding shop and field environments.

The technician will work primarily with 12V/24V vehicle electrical systems and low-voltage accessories, including GPS tracking devices, telematics gateways, electronic logging devices (ELDs), cameras, sensors, antennas, and associated wiring. The role requires clean wiring practices, accurate diagnostics, careful documentation, and the ability to trace faults involving power, ground, ignition, connectivity, harnesses, connectors, and device configuration.

This is a shop-based technical position supporting fleet reliability and visibility. The successful candidate will coordinate closely with the Shop Manager, maintenance personnel, transportation, safety, and other internal stakeholders to minimize equipment downtime and ensure telematics installations meet company standards.

Responsibilities

• Install, replace, relocate, and repair GPS and telematics devices on commercial tractors, trailers, trucks, and other fleet assets
• Perform 12V/24V electrical wiring for power, ignition, ground, accessory, diagnostic, and trailer connections
• Install and support related fleet technology including ELDs, dash cameras, sensors, antennas, gateways, and tracking equipment
• Route, loom, secure, label, and protect wiring and harnesses to produce safe, durable, professional installations
• Use multimeters, test lights, diagnostic tools, wiring diagrams, and manufacturer instructions to verify circuits and device operation
• Diagnose loss of power, poor grounds, blown fuses, damaged wiring, intermittent connections, communication failures, and device connectivity issues
• Test GPS location reporting, cellular communication, camera feeds, sensors, and other system functions after installation or repair
• Identify appropriate installation points while avoiding interference with vehicle controls, safety systems, service access, and moving components
• Perform basic harness fabrication, connector repair, terminal replacement, soldering/crimping, heat-shrink application, and fuse installation as needed
• Inspect existing installations for loose wiring, corrosion, damaged components, improper routing, or other conditions that may cause failure
• Document installations and repairs with device serial numbers, asset information, photographs, service notes, and completion status
• Maintain accurate inventory and accountability for GPS units, cameras, sensors, wiring supplies, connectors, fuses, and installation hardware
• Coordinate equipment availability with the Shop Manager and maintenance team to reduce vehicle downtime
• Follow lockout/tagout, electrical safety, PPE, shop safety, and company procedures while working in, around, and underneath commercial equipment
• Escalate recurring device, wiring, network, or platform issues that require vendor or higher-level technical support
• Assist with fleet-wide telematics upgrades, replacements, campaigns, audits, and new-equipment deployments
• Maintain a clean and organized work area and protect company vehicles and equipment during installation and service
• Perform other related fleet electrical and telematics duties as assigned by the Shop Manager

Requirements

Qualifications/Knowledge/Critical Skills

• Hands-on experience with automotive, diesel, commercial vehicle, low-voltage, electrical, electronics, fleet maintenance, or equipment installation work
• Working knowledge of 12V and 24V DC electrical systems, including power, ignition, ground, fuses, relays, connectors, and basic circuit diagnosis
• Ability to read and follow wiring diagrams, pinouts, installation guides, technical instructions, and equipment schematics
• Ability to use a digital multimeter and common electrical diagnostic and installation tools safely and accurately
• Strong troubleshooting skills with the ability to isolate electrical, wiring, hardware, and connectivity problems
• Experience with commercial tractors and trailers strongly preferred
• Prior GPS, ELD, telematics, dash-camera, vehicle electronics, alarm, stereo, upfitting, or fleet-device installation experience preferred
• Familiarity with fleet platforms such as Samsara, Motive, Geotab, Verizon Connect, Lytx, or similar systems is a plus
• Ability to perform clean crimping, terminal repair, harness routing, soldering, heat-shrink, and weather-resistant connections
• Strong attention to detail and commitment to right-first-time installation quality
• Ability to document completed work accurately using photographs, asset numbers, device information, and service notes
• Ability to work independently while coordinating effectively with shop personnel and operational departments
• Valid driver's license and acceptable driving record preferred
• High school diploma or GED preferred; technical, automotive electrical, diesel, electronics, or related vocational training is a plus

Physical Demands/Environmental Factors

• Regularly work in, around, inside, and underneath commercial tractors, trailers, trucks, and shop equipment
• Frequent standing, walking, bending, kneeling, crouching, reaching, climbing, and use of hands for wiring and installation work
• Ability to lift and/or move up to 50 pounds
• Ability to use ladders, hand tools, power tools, electrical diagnostic equipment, and installation hardware
• Regular exposure to a maintenance shop environment including vehicle noise, dust, grease, weather, moving equipment, and temperature variation
• Must be able to wear required personal protective equipment and follow shop and electrical safety procedures

Work Environment / Position Structure

• This position is based at the Ecology Auto Parts Bloomington Shop in Bloomington, California
• The role is primarily hands-on and shop-based, with work performed directly on commercial fleet equipment
• Work assignments are directed by the Shop Manager and coordinated with maintenance, transportation, safety, and other operational personnel
• Occasional work at other company locations or field sites may be required based on fleet needs
• Overtime, schedule flexibility, or after-hours support may be required during fleet deployments, urgent repairs, or operational projects

Compensation

The Telematics Installation Technician position offers an hourly pay range of $20.00 to $25.00 per hour, commensurate with relevant commercial vehicle electrical experience, telematics/GPS installation experience, diagnostic capability, and overall technical skill.
