Job summary

Motive is seeking a Telematics Coverage Engineer to expand data capture across diverse vehicle architectures, researching OEM signals and developing approaches to interpret telemetry for new product capabilities.

You will travel to customer sites, use live debugging, and document findings for engineering and product teams, driving coverage projects with global teams and delivering valuable insights to customers.

Qualifications

  • 4+ years of experience analyzing automotive vehicle network traffic or working with vehicle telematics systems.
  • Hands-on experience interfacing with vehicles and vehicle communication networks.
  • Familiarity with reverse-engineering tools and hardware such as Vehicle Spy, PCAN, or SavvyCAN.
  • Working knowledge of automotive standards, including SAE J1979, J1939, ISO 15765, WWH-OBD, OBD-II, UDS, J1708, or J1587.
  • Bachelor’s degree or higher in electrical engineering, software engineering, automotive engineering, or a related field.

  • Analyze wiring diagrams, body builder guides, and related OEM documentation to determine vehicle connection and data-access strategies.

  • Use live vehicle debugging, data scraping, reverse engineering, and custom scripts to expand vehicle coverage.
  • Provide technical insights that inform new telematics features and improve the interpretation of vehicle data.
  • Travel to customer locations to interface with vehicles and validate coverage solutions.
  • Drive vehicle coverage projects in partnership with global, cross-functional teams.

About the Role

Motive is seeking a Telematics Coverage Engineer to expand the breadth and depth of vehicle telemetry data captured across diverse on‑and off‑highway vehicle architectures. You will research OEM telematics offerings, analyze vehicle network traffic, and develop practical approaches to capture and interpret data that powers new product capabilities and delivers valuable insights to customers.

You will drive vehicle coverage initiatives from research through validation, using live vehicle debugging, log analysis, data scraping, and reverse‑engineering techniques.

What You’ll Do

What We’re Looking For
  • 4+ years of experience analyzing automotive vehicle network traffic or working with vehicle telematics systems.
  • Bachelor’s degree or higher in electrical engineering, software engineering, automotive engineering, or a related field.
  • Hands‑on experience interfacing with vehicles and vehicle communication networks.
  • Proficiency in C, C++, Python, or an equivalent programming language.
  • Experience using physical debugging tools such as multimeters, oscilloscopes, or scan tools.
  • Familiarity with reverse‑engineering tools and hardware such as Vehicle Spy, PCAN, or SavvyCAN.
  • Working knowledge of automotive standards, including SAE J1979, J1939, ISO 15765, WWH‑OBD, OBD‑II, UDS, J1708, or J1587.
Pay Transparency

Your compensation may be based on several factors, including education, work experience, and certifications. For certain roles, total compensation may include restricted stock units. Motive offers benefits including health, pharmacy, optical and dental care benefits, paid time off, sick time off, short term and long term disability coverage, life insurance as well as 401k contribution (all benefits are subject to eligibility requirements). The compensation range for this position will depend on where you reside. Motive uses three geographic zones to determine pay range. For this role, the compensation ranges are:

  • San Francisco, California $160,000—$200,000 USD
  • U.S. metropolitan areas: Los Angeles, San Diego, New York City Area, Seattle, Washington D.C. $150,000—$190,000 USD
  • Other locations in the United States $140,000—$175,000 USD
