General Information

The Telecommunications Infrastructure Technician is responsible for the installation, maintenance, repair, testing, and documentation of telecommunications infrastructure and related systems across the university. This position performs utility locating activities in compliance with Virginia 811 requirements, interprets utility records and construction documents, and uses specialized equipment to identify and mark underground telecommunications facilities. The technician supports construction, maintenance, and damage prevention efforts by responding to locate requests, emergency calls, and field investigations while ensuring all work complies with applicable safety standards, regulations, and response requirements.

Duties and Responsibilities

This position requires the ability to learn skills needed to read and interpret floor plans, utility maps, GIS data, as-built drawings, blueprints, wiring diagrams, and technical specifications to determine work requirements and facility locations. The candidate installs, troubleshoots, tests, and maintains telecommunications cabling and equipment; accurately documents completed work; and ensures proper labeling of cables and infrastructure components. The position requires a commitment to representing James Madison University professionally when interacting with campus customers, contractors, and external partners. A strong focus on safety, accuracy, and timely completion of work is essential to success in this role.

Qualifications
  • Valid driver's license with an acceptable driving record.
  • Basic computer skills, including work order, ticket, and documentation management systems (PCR360).
  • Knowledge of telecommunications cabling systems, including fiber optic, Category 5e, Category 6, and Category 6A cabling.
  • Understanding of telecommunications color codes, cable identification, termination and testing procedures.
  • Ability to install, maintain and upgrade all forms of CATV, network and telecommunications infrastructure throughout the JMU property.
  • Ability to learn technical systems and work independently with minimal supervision.
  • Strong attention to detail and accurate documentation.
  • Effective verbal and written communication skills with the ability to interact professionally with supervisors, coworkers, contractors, and customers.
  • Strong customer service and interpersonal skills, with the ability to maintain positive working relationships in a team-oriented environment.
  • Ability to follow verbal instructions, written procedures, safety requirements, and technical specifications.
  • Ability to safely operate hand tools, power tools, testing equipment, and utility locating equipment while maintaining a clean, organized, and code-compliant work environment.
  • Ability to work outdoors for extended periods in varying weather and environmental conditions.
  • Ability to walk long distances, work on uneven terrain, and perform physically demanding tasks including bending, kneeling, climbing, and lifting equipment weighing up to 75 pounds.
  • Ability to work safely in and around active construction sites, roadways, confined spaces, and other potentially hazardous work environments.
  • Demonstrated problem-solving skills and the ability to exercise sound judgment when responding to operational, maintenance, and emergency situations.
  • Ability to adhere to all university and industry quality, safety standards, and regulations, including OSHA guidelines and site-specific protocols, to maintain a safe work environment.
  • Possesses a safety-minded attention to detail when using power tools and ensures all workspace and installations are clean, organized, aesthetically pleasing, and compliant with all relevant codes and safety requirements.
