Job description

The Position

The purpose of this classification is to perform technical work functions associated with

installing, maintaining, servicing and repairing all aspects of the Fiber Optic

Communications Network.

Duties

Essential Functions

The following duties are normal for this position. These are not to be construed as exclusive or all-inclusive. Other duties may be required and assigned.

Install, maintain, and repair the Fiber Optic System and related equipment; perform

troubleshooting and diagnostic testing to identify and resolve problems; ensure proper

connection to the router.

Assist in engineering multiple communications systems to utilize maximum allowable

bandwidth; maintain redundant paths for emergency coverage; verify fiber connectivity,

optical propagation levels, power requirements, and availability of equipment.

Construct city wide fiber optic circuits; installs equipment; tests functionality and

connectivity; coordinate communication types, port settings, router configurations, IP

addressing, encryption, and encoding; educate the customer on operations and basic

troubleshooting.

Use truck-mounted boom bucket, or may perform underground installation to install

equipment, remove defective wiring, transfer wires, or conduct repairs; locate aerial or

underground distribution and drops.

Conduct splicing with fusion splicer, connect, service and repair of fiber optics within

system.

Monitor network for changes, errors, equipment failures and other possible service issues,

perform service calls to resolve subscriber problems and complaints.

Perform CLI tests and quarterly signal leakage monitoring, repair and documentation within

the system.

Troubleshoot common system and drop line faults; correct outside distribution problems

such as signal level and signal quality degradation, insertion and cable losses, ingress,

egress, AC problems, defective coax amplifiers, power supplies, fiber optic nodes and cable,

and status monitoring equipment.

Utilize precautionary work methods and safety equipment to maintain safety of work crews

and the public.

Operate various equipment, power tools, hand tools, and supplies in order to complete

work assignments; operate and maintain Sunset tester, fiber splicer, optical time domain

reflectometer (OTDR), light meter, time domain reflectometer (TDR), fault locator, cable

locator, CLI equipment, optical spectrum analyzer, and optical power meter.

Maintain accurate work orders, logs, reports and documentation of daily activity.

Maintain vehicle, tools, and equipment in a safe, clean working condition.

Operate a personal computer to enter, retrieve, review, or modify data, utilizing Microsoft

Word, PowerPoint, Publisher, Excel, Access, AltaVista, Visio, Navis, UNIX, GNI Nettest,

Lucent Wavestar, CIT, Net Outlook, Internet, e-mail, or other software; and operate

general office or other equipment as necessary to complete essential functions.

Communicate with management, employees, city departments, fire/law enforcement

officials, contractors, outside agencies, customers, the public, and other individuals as

needed to coordinate work activities, review status of work, exchange information, resolve

problems, or give/receive advice/direction.

Communicate via telephone and/or two-way radio; communicate effectively and coherently

over radio channels while initiating and responding to radio communications; provide

information; take and relay messages; respond to requests for service.

Maintain a comprehensive, current knowledge and awareness of applicable

laws/regulations; maintain an awareness of new trends and advances in the profession,

maintain professional affiliations; attend workshops and training sessions as appropriate.

May be required to work after normal business hours, weekends, and holidays.

Supervisory Responsibilities

This job has no supervisory responsibilities.

Education And/or Experience

High school diploma or general education degree (GED) required; with 2-5 years’

experience in fiber optics, telecommunications, electronics, electrical

distribution/transmission systems, or public utility operations; or any equivalent

combination of education, training, and experience which provides the requisite

Certificates, Licenses, Registrations

Must possess and maintain a valid Georgia Driver’s License with the appropriate

endorsements; or must be obtained within six (6) months of hire date.
