Job summary

Scope of Job: To provide the intake, review, management, and licensing ofintellectual property created at UTRGV. Responsible for workingclosely with industrial counterparts, faculty, and patent attorneysfor development, licensing, and commercialization of newtechnologies created at UTRGV.

Description of Duties:

• Conducts prior art searches, patentability and marketabilitystudies, evaluates new technologies.
• Provides training and outreach programs to faculty andstudents.
• Promotes new technologies to potential licensees globally. Thisincludes writing public promotional materials.
• Identifies potential commercialization partners, ranging frommanagement teams for start-ups to multinational corporations.
• Negotiates license agreements, fosters existing licenseerelationships, and monitors compliance.
• Serves as first contact for all questions regarding intellectualproperty.
• Manages relationships with internal and external contacts,including researchers, licensees, and early-stage investors.
• Reports for regulatory compliance including Federal iEdison. Mustseek continuing training to stay current on regulatorychanges.
• Drafts agreements and contracts.
• Edits specific web pages using Cascade and similar tools.
• Performs other duties as assigned.

Supervision Given: Direct supervision of assigned staff.

Required Education: Bachelor's degree in life sciences or related engineering, science,or other related field from an accredited University.

Preferred Education: Master's degree or terminal degree in life sciences or relatedengineering, science, or other related field from an accreditedUniversity.

Licenses/Certifications: None.

Required Experience:

• Two (2) years of experience in intellectual property managementand commercialization, including experience in facilitatinginventor disclosure, and in managing inventor patent attorneyrelationships and experience in managing and negotiating licensesin the science, engineering, biomedical, and/or health-relatedintellectual property, or
• One (1) year of the required experience with a Master's degreein engineering, life sciences, or other related field from anaccredited University.

Preferred Experience: More than the required experience in the required duties.Experience leading and managing technology transfer staff andinterns. Experience in higher education environment. Strongbackground in science or engineering.

Equipment: Use of standard office equipment, especially Microsoft suiteprograms: Word, Excel, PowerPoint, Outlook or equivalent emailsystem. Experience with patent analytical software. StandardComputer and Software Skills.

Working Conditions: Needs to be able to successfully perform all required duties.Office Environment; some travel and weekend work is required.Exerting up to 10 pounds of force occasionally, and/or a negligibleamount of force frequently or constantly to lift, carry, push, pullor otherwise move objects, including the human body.
