Summary
- A Technician V functions as a technical resource for the laboratory. This role assists managers, supervisors, and lead technologists with daily operations and workflow. The individual is responsible for test ordering, shipping, troubleshooting, and processing clinical specimens for diagnostic laboratory testing within the health system.
Responsibilities
- Maintain a professional appearance and conduct at all times. Collaborate well with peers and authority figures. Promote Penn Medicine standards and positive patient and staff relations. Comply with hospital, laboratory, safety, and HIPAA regulations. Report hazards promptly. Complete mandatory training on schedule.
- Follow SOPs for biological specimen processing, evaluate and resolve related issues.
- Keep accurate records and logs per SOPs.
- Maintain a safe and organized work environment, demonstrating safe practices.
- Keep personal items away from work areas.
- Respond professionally to phone inquiries, providing information or referrals as needed. Research and follow up on specimen and test result questions.
- Understand collection requirements for special or referral tests, prepare specimens, ensure sample integrity, and coordinate dispatch and pickup.
- Stay updated with laboratory minutes and changes.
- Manage inventory, reordering supplies proactively.
- Assist in training staff and students on procedures and techniques.
- Perform routine temperature checks and preventive maintenance on lab equipment.
Credentials
- Certification by the American Society for Clinical Pathology (ASCP) as a PBT or MLA.
Education or Equivalent Experience
- Associate degree in Arts or Science or equivalent experience.
- Experience in hospital laboratory settings, including phlebotomy and specimen receiving areas.
- Experience with Laboratory Information Systems.
