Job summary

Indiana University Health is seeking a part-time unit secretary/PCA to support perioperative services at Fishers Hospital. Responsibilities include patient prep for surgery, direct care tasks and clerical duties to maintain smooth unit operations.

The role requires a high school diploma or GED, BLS certification, and basic medical terminology knowledge; previous acute care experience or IU Health PCA training is preferred.

Qualifications

• Requires high school diploma or GED.
• Prior acute patient care experience or completion of IU Health PCA education program.
• Current Basic Life Support (BLS) certification through the AHA or IU Health PCA program.
• Knowledge of medical terminology and infection control practices.
• Ability to perform unit secretary tasks and follow department policies.

Responsibilities

• Assist in prepping patients for surgery and post-op care.
• Ambulate and assist with toileting; IV removal and post-op care as directed.
• Provide direct patient care and unit clerical support, including charting and sign-in/out processes.
• Offer information and directions to physicians, patients and families; facilitate tests or procedures as scheduled.

Overview

Schedule: Part Time Rotating Shifts (Supplemental Hours 0-24 weekly, may vary at the needs of the department). No holidays, no weekends.

Primary Responsibilities

TUS within PeriOp are instrumental in prepping patients for surgery and assisting with patient care tasks for discharge home.

Responsibilities include ambulating & toileting patients, surgical prep, IV removal, post op specific care, etc.

Provides a combination of direct patient care and unit clerical duties for the department. Administers care to designated patients under the direction of a Clinical Nurse and provides support to the patient care team. Ensures a clean and orderly environment for the patient. Provides information, directions and other assistance to physicians, patients, families, customers and vendors. May schedule tests and procedures for the patient, maintain patient records and sign patients in and out of the unit. May be responsible for the ordering, receiving and delivering of equipment and supplies for the patient care team. May be required to provide continuous observation including suicide prevention.

Candidate Qualifications

High School Diploma or GED is required. CPR May be required to complete Unit Secretary training program.

• Requires previous comparable acute patient care experience or successful completion of the IU Health PCA education program.
• Requires current Basic Life Support certification through the AHA or attainment at the completion of the IU Health PCA education program. Other advanced life support certifications may be required per unit/department specialty according to patient care policies.
• Requires basic knowledge of medical terminology.
• Requires knowledge of procedures and standards related to patient care activities.
• Requires knowledge of principles of infection control.
• Requires basic computer skills.
